I've seen a lot of people (understandably) upset that Anathema
1. Fucked Newt because her ancestor predicted it
And
2. Stayed with Newt who is a bit of a wet blanket
And those are valid of course. But have you ever considered that when it came right down to it that the reason she decided to stay with Newt is because he's the first person in her life to, when finding out about the prophesied quickie, basically say "um that's SERIOUSLY FUCKED UP"
Like he's not all "wow guess I'm your fated live match" he's rightly horrified and is "um hi this is creepy and you should be grossed out by this"
We've seen (in the show) Anathema's mother telling a child Anathema that she has to do as Agnes said. That she has no free will. And though she doesn't want that but she's given no choice.
And Newt, especially when the package arrives goes, "hey you can have free will. It's messed up to expect you to make decisions based on what your long dead prophecies"
And it would benefit him to go along with Agnes. Anathema is amazing and he knows she's amazing and Agnes is calling her his wife and saying they fuck and it is clearly a benefit for him to go along with this.
But he's not. Even though Agnes helped them save the world he doesn't think it's okay that Anathema doesn't have choice. He wants her to have choice. Even if that choice turns out not to be him.
And of course that's precisely why she does choose him
That’s one of the things I regret is that it’s not made more obvious. It’s precisely what I think Newt and Anathema’s arc was supposed to be, because it’s - as many many things in the Good Omens plot are - about free will and consent, and Newt is actually rather sweet to Anathema despite all his flaws.
