Continuing my binge watch of actually popular, current shows, last week I watched Dark — all of it. Watched it n bus to and from work as well as at home and at my neighbors, where I was pet sitting. (Prior to that I binged on all of Stranger Things and Season 1 of Orphan Black.)
Non-Spoilery Thoughts:
Absolutely fascinating! The production is top notch — music, cinematography, acting, pacing, etc. I will say I liked Season 1 over 2, but that’s probably because I watched straight through — and at that point it did become more predictable, plus even more confusing.
Because I like to make things challenging and educational (I guess that’s why!) I watched the entire thing with the original German dialog and German subtitles, which I’ll always do if I have the option. This was mostly successful, but I’m sure I missed 20% of the dialog either when they were discussing abstract concepts like time (Adam’s narration and conversations are very difficult to grasp) or speaking really fast. The more I watched, the more I rewound to reread subtitles or freeze them or look up what seemed like let words. As a result I think I may watch the second season with English subtitles to fill in gaps. Even though I got most of it. Certainly all the times people were yelling at each other and saying Arschloch!
My favorite characters are
-
Egon Tiedemann, the police chief
- Ulrich Nielsen (Nordic handsomeness I love, and
- Jonas (extremely expressive, has great subtlety, character you can actually sympathize with)
(I guess also Noah but just because he’s so effective as a bogeyman. And Helge too.)
I loved how it was pouring pretty much all through the first season. Almost nobody has an umbrella either. It really is rainy in Germany but they added extra rain for atmosphere. The second season it’s mostly bright and sunny.
Most Americans probably wonder about this, but it’s super realistic how kids walked and biked up and down the forest paths to get to school etc., often alone. That’s how it is in German towns. There’s no big yellow school bus and kids have more independence and freedom.
The music — both background effects and pop music. I can’t get enough Nena so the soundtrack was fun. I will say the sad music montage near the end of each episode got old. But I loved all the scary motifs.
I’m not scared of caves but that cave? NO.

P.S. Not Garak/Bashir related but I figure this is my pop-culture blog and people who watch TV are following it, so hey.
