Other than the ovbious, this is interesting to me for BTS reasons you’d only find in the TV Companion. Something you’d perhaps miss in the few seconds the show holds the shot but is laid clear in the first slowed-down gif.

See the cars turning around the corner and people walking through Soho on the pavement in front of Aziraphale’s bookshop?

Everything behind the turning cars at the top left hand corner of the gif? CGI. Same for the second level of all the buildings except Aziraphale’s bookshop.

As for the stream of cars and people methodically strolling by, here’s the system Cesco Reidy engineered to make it flow like a real Soho street:

“Michael Ralph’s set allowed me to run vehicles through the street and round the back of it, which meant i was able to create any kind of traffic I wanted. I had fifty cars available to me, and each one had a driver on the radio so I was able to speak to them all simultaneously. With the help of my team, I had complete control at the press of a button, and could make the traffic flow or create a jam. Then of course there were the pedestrians,’ he adds, and goes on to explain how a seemingly random crowd movement requires careful management for the camera. ‘There are systems whereby we break pedestrians into different groups on the pavement. Then we train them to move in circuits, so once filming begins they start to move and will continue in a circular route until I stop them. We also needed a system to randomize people to make it look completely authentic. We wanted to see people walking slowly and talking .people walking on their own and not talking; others on their mobile phones; some standing; others running and so it goes on.’

About three hundred extras were needed to make this work, Cesco explains. ‘They all know the basic circular routine, but then you begin to pick off subgroups based on month of birth, for example, assign them an additional task like talking on a phone, and effectively randomize elements of the system at a single cue. It’s very satisfying!’ he adds. ‘It also contributes something to the look of the show, and we were all so grateful to the supporting cast. They are a very important part of any production.”
