I really don’t understand why some young fans are like this. I hate gatekeepers who think that young fans are annoying but I also hate when the young ones don’t allow old fans to have fun. If someone makes you uncomfortable because of their age, just don’t interact or block them? Is really that easy. But we all have our right to enjoy the things we like.

Ohhhh this ask was about petimetrek ? I mean anon I’m not asian n my comod (who’s more in charge of like the stuff like tagging n the blog looking decent) is white, so I can’t fully dispute your thoughts. But I do have some things that I have to say.

You’ve probably seen peti’s blog where other people have written in who are asian and have disagreed with you. You’ve probably also see that the Crowley is based on a fancast of a real actor, Daniel Dae Kim.

And so I do disagree with his you chose to describe that Crowley because those ‘slitty’ eyes are a pretty close depiction of an actual Korean man based on an actual Korean actor.

So while I understand your anger and I get the deeply uncomfortable implications of Crowley being drawn as someone with a monolid, it’s not the point where I feel like I personally can call it racism ? Or stop reblogging Peti’s art?

As far I and others I’ve talked to know theres not really been historically a negative connection between east Asians n Asians in general being connected to snakes in a caricature/dehumanization way.

I noticed on Peti’s blog that you (Anon) seem to be against Crowley being poc which is something that I fundamentally disagree with because as long as you are not playing into troubling racial dynamics (white angel swarthy demon) Crowley being POC is actually really great. Because Crowley is a multifaceted charcter and as many of Peti’s asks have pointed out, that’s great for poc. We’ve run into criticism before against Crowley being a person of color being bad in all situations which I and many others disagree with.

This is something that I’ve thought a lot and talked with more than one east Asian person about and honestly while your feelings and hurt are valid, it’s not something that I feel like is a problem or a larger induction of a racist problem.

I fully understand you not wanting to pm someone that you don’t personally know, and also I’m 23 so if you’re a minor i understand not wanting to directly engage with someone much older. (Which I think was what you were saying with regards to one of the anons that you sent Peti ? A feel like a lot of people misunderstood that and speaking as someone who was 16 and on Tumblr interacting with adults I fully understand and support that)

I think that a Crux of this is that you have have trouble with something and it can be somewhat related to marginalization without it being something that shouldn’t be done entirely ? Madam Tracey and Newt are racist in the book by excusing Shadwells racism …. I’m not comfortable with art or fancasts of them being poc, but if everyone else is a POC then I’m more fine with it. I still Reblog that here, even if it’s art if Newt is drawn as a poc.I don’t like white Az/brown crow it’s a dynamic I don’t agree with. I’ll still Reblog it here.

Sorry to add on & I’ll delete it if u want to but uh? Asian here! And OP is absolutely right in that there’s nothing wrong with making Crowley (East) Asian – so long as he isn’t the only PoC while Aziraphale remains lily white, blond haired, blue eyed.

Also unless you’re playing specifically into wrong cultural elements and placing them on a different ethnicity/culture than that they’re originally from as far as I know it isn’t/shouldn’t be a big deal.

Like, literally petimetrek hasn’t done anything wrong in portraying Crowley like that; anon is literally just whining because they see white as the default and dont actually know what they’re talking abt like lmfao,,,, not everyone is out to make caricatures of poc,,,,

I think perhaps they saw the whole jkr Nagini debacle go down and decided that “oh so all East Asians cant be snakes” while that was SPECIFICALLY because jkr was being racist in very different ways and conflated all Asian cultures into just one monolith, on top of the “woc is cursed bc it is in her bloodline, woc is a monster, woc is the literal pet of a wizard nazi” thing.

(as an aside: I LITERALLY talked abt this before in DMs & did research in snake symbolism before I actually… hc’d Crowley as (Han) Chinese…. I know what I’m talking about!! Also as a general thing while snakes are often associated with bad omens and bad luck in western/white cultures (esp culturally christian places) in most Asian countries they’re like. the opposite.)
