Literally playing devil’s advocate here… (good omens meta)
Picking up from this post about how Hell’s more virtuous at bottom line than Heaven:
What if the reason Hell (esp. Hastur and Ligur) is so unhappy with Crowley’s lack of craftsmanship because he’s providing cheap, massproduced souls, nothing of quality.
We don’t know what exactly souls are needed for in the GO verse, but let’s speculate:
let’s assume souls are an energy source when armageddon comes.
Mass-produced, ‘simply and obnoxiously vile’ (think current US administration) souls are like cheap batteries. Sure, you got a lot, but they are pretty much useless.
And they produce paperwork.
‘proper souls’ (we know Hell has a most composers e.g.) might go and help Hell prosper. Bring stuff up to date, become proper demons themselves etc.
What Crowley’s thus doing with his mass production is: he’s hindering Hell.
Now remember that Crowley’s probably not the only angel who was cast from Heaven for asking questions. But he got to enjoy life up on earth, while everyone else has to deal with the additional work he’s causing AND thn he has the audacity to stop the sole chance the other demons had for a bit of better life… because he, lbr, thinks he’s better than them… (on the show. In book and script he’s more worried about humans and earth. while he does think he’s better than other demons… it’s not as… overwhelming as on the show)
this is the kind of self-righteous you’d expect from God… lbr
