Anonymous asked:

What if Aziraphale asked Crowley if Gabriel was right when he said to Aziraphale he needs to lose the gut?

forineffablereasons answered:

ah, anon. i feel where you’re coming from on this, and i think a good number of fic and ficlets and headcanons have gone around about it. lots of people are asking and answering this question, and that’s fine for them. it seems to be a trove of hurt/comfort concepts, and i feel ya because i love hurt/comfort, but i’m not gonna engage with this one though.

first of all, as a fat person personally, i’m trying to break free of the cycle of needing approval of skinny people to exist the way i exist, so the idea of crowley reassuring aziraphale into comfort again with his own skin is not really an idea i’m here for. especially in intimate relationship settings, where the need for partner approval can become such a wrought and precarious thing. i prefer my characters to be comfortable in their own skin unapologetically, without depending on permission or approval, or to at least do that work on their own internally rather than depending on validation from an intimate partner. and i think aziraphale is canonically a character for whom his own fatness is a nonissue. he’s fat, and he likes food, and he likes comfort, and there’s no baggage to any of that for aziraphale. he doesn’t have any of the insecurities or shame that fat people are “supposed” to have, and that’s been really rare in fat representation in the past (tho i do think we’re starting to see better rep now, sometimes), and i don’t want to give it to him. i think there are other ways that crowley can love and support aziraphale without having to navigate body related shame, and for me, that’s the fantasy baby.

i also think aziraphale’s dismissal of the comment in the show goes a long way for him in a character arc way. the only time aziraphale’s fatness mentioned - in gabriel’s comment - it’s in terms of aziraphale shaping up to join an army and go to war. it is clearly played to establish gabriel as a villain who aziraphale should want to work against and who’s opinion aziraphale should disregard. and aziraphale’s answer is to say, “I’m soft.” in that moment, aziraphale is viewing his weaknesses only in terms of what’s expected of him from heaven (and note that he says i’m soft, which goes to his body and his mentality both). but instead of trying to change himself to suit heaven’s image, he goes on trying to contact a higher authority and end the apocalypse the reasonable way. he doesn’t for an instant think that if he lost the gut or whatever that he would fit into heaven’s ideas, because he wouldn’t. the comment is made, and it’s immediately over for aziraphale. and in the end, it’s aziraphale’s softness that really saves the world - his softness in refusing outright to fight, to be a soldier, and his softness when talking to adam. “but i’m just a kid!” adam says. “that’s not a bad thing to be,” aziraphale responds. adam is exactly everything he needs to be as he already is. aziraphale is soft, and he leans into it. he doesn’t try to change himself. he doesn’t fit in with heaven, and we’re all told explicitly in the text that that’s a good thing and aziraphale knows it. also, gabriel’s an ass? who cares what he thinks.

so for me, it’s a matter both of positive fat rep as well as aziraphale’s character arc that this trope is not for me. but this trope might be for other people, for other reasons, and that’s okay too. nobody has to justify themselves to me. i’m not asking for anybody’s reasons or keeping lists of people who are into it; i don’t care. you do you. there was definitely a time in my life where watching another fat person’s skinny partner explicitly vocalize support and appreciation for a fat body shape in a romantic and sexual partner would have really been helpful, so i get that perspective too.

but where i’m at right now, it’s not for me in this blog space. love to you anon, i hope you do find the story you’re looking for.

i absolutely love that he needs no approval i think i share this opinion its important to me that hes unapologetic about his body because now that i think about it i do click out of fics where hes insecure about it? but i can see it being important to others that he gets that reassurance aziraphale long post

1991-1995 Anime Primer
Battle Angel (1993)

In the distant future, a floating utopia called Zalem looms over the ravaged surface of the Earth. In its shadow lies Scrap Iron City, a dumping ground for Zalem’s garbage and gathering place for the dregs of society. It’s among the hellish trash heaps that Ido, a genius cyber-surgeon, discovers an angelic young girl. Though all that remains of her is a head and torso, her brain is intact, and he soon has her up and running in a small but sturdy steel body. Since she doesn’t know her own name, Ido christens her Gally after his dead cat and dotes on her like a pet. But Gally is no pussycat. While she may not recall her past, she instinctively remembers the deadly cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst. Employing her skills as a hunter-warrior, Gally seeks her destiny in battle.

Battle Angel is a two-part OVA created to promote Yukito Kishiro’s manga of the same name; the anime adds an original character and streamlines plot points to create a work that is both preview and stand-alone. The ultra-violent action and gritty environs are the main appeals of Battle Angel, but the emotional development of its heroine is also handled with surprising deftness as she grows rapidly from innocent child to burgeoning adolescent and, finally, somber adult.

Battle Angel’s Western release was impactful enough that, a quarter-century later, a Hollywood film adaption produced by James Cameron was released in February of 2018.

Thrift Storytime

So!! My story begins with the fact that my parents and I traveled to lower Indiana in May to go to my cousin’s wedding. We were there a day early (arrived the previous night), as we were invited to the rehearsal dinner.

So during that extra time we had we walked around the downtown shops and what not (I submitted a few choice items to ShiftyThrifting from them), and then we went to the local Goodwill.

Now, this Goodwill was actually really really nice. Nicer than any I’ve ever seen. And we walk around the store until we get to the book section. “Hey Mom,” I call. “They have some old piano books over here.”

(My mom likes seeing/buying piano books, especially old ones from when she was a kid)

And so she’s flipping through them and remarking on them, occasionally holding one up for my dad and I to look at. “I had that one as a kid,” my dad says about one in particular. My mom holds up two more kid practice books. “I had those too! And that one!”

Hmm

My mom looks closer at the books. “… These have your name on them.”

(Now note: we have never lived in Indiana. My dad grew up in South Carolina. We currently live in Michigan.)

So we huddle up and look at the books, and my dad guesses that my uncle somehow got a hold of them after my grandma died, and donated them. Our next question was how long had those been in this Goodwill? My grandmother has been dead for a long time. My uncle and family have lived in Indiana for years!

So we took a photo of the piano books with my dad’s name clearly written on them in my grandmother’s handwriting, and when we got a moment after the wedding rehearsal dinner, we “cornered” him with our photo and the question.

He got a laugh out of it, and said they’ve only been there for a few weeks. It’s just really funny that we’d happen to find something we used to own!!

I was thinking about how I relate to Crowley and Aziraphale ‘cause like.  I’m closer to Aziraphale’s body shape and have a lot of the same tastes, but my overall level of cynicism and bitterness is much closer to Crowley.

and then I realized I was just describing Garak.

making this post I was like “the ironic thing here is that I don’t really have anything in common with Garak either, aside from general saltiness and a fondness for Jane Austen”

and then two minutes ago I got done mending some pants

crowleys--angel

Okay so we know, thanks to some pictures of the deleted “crowley trying to sleep on the wall” scene, that Crowley actually sleeps in like a full pajama set (black silk!) which is totally contrary to most of the fandoms headcanons of him sleeping naked/mostly naked.

image

SO, may i proposition the fandom for a new one?

that it is, in fact, aziraphale, who sleeps in the nude.

and probably takes up the whole damn bed like a starfish.

and has the sheets and blankets chaotically twisted and mostly pushed off.

meanwhile crowley is in his cozy and modest jammies, tucked in all nice and neat beneath the blankets, probably taking up as little space as possible.

i take criticism in the form of fanart kthanks
