coworker told me he “hates all mollusks” today. and to each their own obviously but like… theres 100k species of mollusk… you really hate all of them bro? nautiluses and oysters and snails and nudibranches and chitons and thousands of animals youve never even heard of???? what did ammonites even fucking do to you
As someone from the West Country the character of Brother Francis is so weird to me. On the one hand, I wanna be jokingly offended but on the other hand I know about five people EXACTLY LIKE THAT
Why Aziraphale and Crowley got mindwiped in the ending of the book but not in the show?
Well, two reasons.
Well, two big main reasons but they split off into some smaller reasons along the way.
The most obvious one is….. Well, even if Aziraphale and Crowley were central to the book and the most well-talked-about and intersting part of it… The story wasn’t really ABOUT them. The show centerlized them a lot more, and gave them proper character arcs and a relationship arc.
Book!Aziraphale and Crowley forgetting everything just means they can’t speculate about God’s Ineffable Plan anymore, Show!Aziraphale and Crowley forgetting everything would be setting back the clock on some REAL important personal developments for these two and it’ll really be a bummer.
Secondly, people have already talked about how the book had to be updated because it was written Obviously About the Cold War and that’s not really relevant today, but it’s important to remember it came out in 1990. The Cold War hasn’t *technically* ended yet, but it was certainly winding down.
Good Omens the Book came out in a period of “Oh, all of our lives we’ve been afraid the world was about to Come to an End, but now it actually seems like it won’t happen!”, and the 90’s were considered a peaceful time…. Well, at least if you lived in the westren world…
The book ending, where Adam pretty much restore things as they were with only minor changes… I think it worked better at the time. I think 1990 was a point where “Oh thank goodness, everything is back to the way it was” was the acceptable ending. But the show came out in 2019, and we are CURRENTLY living in the “HOLY SHIT IS THE WORLD COMING TO AN END?” phase of history. I don’t think the book’s focus on ‘Everything is Normal, well, mostly’ would’ve checked today. I mean, how do we know it won’t happen AGAIN?
So the show puts more emphasis on the fact that things HAVE changed, and not just the books in Aziraphale’s store. Even if changing the world drastically with your god-like powers is Bad Actually, people have been changed by the experience and that’s our hope for a better future. Newt and Anathema and Shadwall and Tracy have been changed as well (this is all in the book too, of course, Aziraphale and Crowley are basically the only who just got back to Regular Routine in the book, but I do feel like the show does more to put an emphasis on it), but also Aziraphale and Crowley are our Proper Main Characters and they’re also the ones with the most meaningful changes (and the changes that weren’t at all in the book), their lives aren’t gonna be the same now. Not just did they go through their arcs - Crowley is less apathetic and cynical and Aziraphale realized that Heaven Kinda Sucks - but they also drastically changed their position with Heaven and Hell! Whatever happens from now on, they’re not gonna be put-upon cogs in the system anymore.
hc that crowley is secretly the most tender vanilla person in the world but aziraphale is nasty
If Aziraphale and Crowley had raised Adam or any child even though Crowley “doesn’t read books” I can totally see him and Aziraphale having the same dynamic Husband I have where Husband does the bed time story and occasionally he calls me in to Drama up a character
Aziraphale’s stopped on an open page, his forehead scrunched up.
“Papa?” The little boy asked.
“Just a moment sweetheart” Aziraphale said smiling sweetly, “Crowley darling!” he yelled at the door.
Crowley sauntered in with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes?”
“I need a Voice my dear.” Aziraphale said holding out the book, his perfectly manicured finger indicating the line.
Crowley grinned and walked over to peer at the line indicated. His smile even bigger as he read it.
He then posed and pointed dramatically at their child.
“‘WARE THE GREEN HEID!” He shouted in a thick accent that may or may not be accurate causing their child to shriek with delight.
He straightened up and took a florid bow.
“Thank you dear” Aziraphale said not even trying to hide the mirth in his smile, “I’ll call you again when there are more lines. You’ll enjoy this book I think”
Their son was still laughing himself silly on the bed as Crowley left the room with an airy wave that was slightly spoiled by his grin.
That bit in Cold Open of Good Omens ep 3 with the French Revolution fucks me up cause….. I always assumed Angels and Demons had some sort of Language Magic to circumvent the need to learn a new human language when they move countries or when they haven’t been on Earth in forever and need to talk with humans.
But Aziraphale is BAD at French! Which means either:
1. There’s no Language Magic, Angels and Demons need to sit down and learn languages if they move from… let’s say the Middle East to England, or just popping for visit on Earth after not being around for a long, long time.
2. There IS Language Magic, and it works for all languages and all ethereal\occult beings save for, spesifically, Aziraphale knowing French.
Crossing Paths - 1421 - Heaven
I got to thinking that in all my previous chapters, Aziraphale flailed about being caught by their respective bosses, but he never really put any thought into what that could mean, because it’s simply not how he thinks. So, of course, I decided I needed to enlighten him :D
1421 - Heaven
Aziraphale discreetly rubbed his palms on his tunic, praying that the sweat didn’t leave stains.
No matter how many times they had got away with the… Arrangement in the past, he couldn’t help feeling anxious every time he was summoned to give his reports in person in Heaven. He half-expected to find himself in shackles every time.
“–were considered a great success,” Gabriel was saying, beaming. “Our numbers have never looked better.”
“I’m afraid rather a lot of people died,” Aziraphale said, then hastily bit his tongue.
“Mortals,” Gabriel patiently shook his head with a sigh. “That’s what they do, Aziraphale.”
Everyone saying Michael Sheen’s acting is incredible in Good Omens is wrong.
He is a literal angel anyway and therefore aziraphale was not a stretch thank you
