I LOVE the visual design Good Omens’ Heaven. Like, making Hell look sucky is pretty easy (although I like Good Omens’ take on it too. The balance between ‘Demons rule it’ and ‘Demons were banished it as punishment’ as just… a REALLY crappy office environment is pretty inspired), but…. man, Heaven looks INSUFFERABLE.

Everything is just…. too much; too clean, too bright, too sterile, too empty.

And it extends beyond the set-design, I love how Heaven is the land of Forced Smiles and Weird-Looking Uncomfortable Close Ups. It just creates a great sense of unease in every scene. Every time Gabriel forces his stupid head so close to the camera, the hostility just OOZES off the screen.

And of course, Outfit Design. The other Angels have some clear…. aesthetic consistency with Aziraphale. But on the same time, they all look just different enough from his manner of dress to make it clear he’s an Outsider to them…  He doesn’t really fit in there. Not anymore at least.

Did Crowley and Aziraphale eat the apples of Eden’s Tree? It could have been one big experiment to God beside the Adam and Eve project : are the immortal capable of changing the very nature of what they are when given a freedom to walk among humans with knowledge other don’t possess?  It could be one more reason why their understanding of good and evil looks closer to human then demon or angel.

One thing I’m not sure about in the Show Version of Aziraphale and Crowley’s ending…. is not actually something that they CHANGED, but something that they didn’t change.

When I first read the book, when I was 15 and a Bit Dumb, and got to the point where Crowley speculates the *real* Big War will be between Humanity versus both Heaven and Hell… I was a bit weirded-out by him wording it as “all of Us against all of Them.”

I mean, Aziraphale and Crowley seem to like humanity a lot more than their fellow Angels and Demons. I would have thought they would be excluded from the ‘us’ and help humanity instead. Or at least not fight against them.

Now that I’m older and I have more info about the context of the book, I think I get it more. 'Good Omens’ is about the end of the Cold War, no secret about it, and Aziraphale and Crowley are basically Celestial\Infernal Secret Agents of their respective Cosmic Superpowers. The book make this comperison over and over again. Even if they don’t want humanity to all die… they are still technically complicit in Divine Imperialism. That’s what Adam calls them out for in the Climax, they just 'mess people around’ and make life more difficult for humanity by spreading Hellish Misery or Divine Righteousness for the sake of Heaven and Hell.

And Adam’s callout didn’t really seem to spring an epiphany in either of these two, they’re basically back into their old ways by the end - even before they go mindwiped! Whatever love they have for humanity, it doesn’t trumps their love for the perks of their jobs.

So, with this read of Aziraphale and Crowley, it does make sense that in the war Crowley envisions…. at the very least the *humans* might not consider them to be on their side.

But this is all in the book, the show’s a little different:

While the 'Secret Agent’ thing is not TOTALLY gone from Show!Aziraphale and Crowley… the show plays them more as…. corporate cogs. Heaven and Hell have a 'workplace’ aesthetic to them, they talk about their qoutas and assigments, and their own victimization in the system is emphasized.  Instead of Adam barely acknowledging them save for calling them out for annoying humanity, they get a heartfelt moment of encouraging and supporting Adam. Their arcs are about breaking free out of Heaven and Hell’s toxicity. Of becoming 'their own side’

Fuck! If they are still on Heaven\Hell’s payroll by the end of the story (and it’s kinda vauge about that), than it’s only because everyone up\down there is way too freaked out to tell them they’re fired! They are basically free agents by the end of the show!

So I don’t think it actually make sense in this context for Crowley to define 'Heaven and Hell’ as 'Us’. They are on their own side, rememeber?

“Budge up, my dear,” Aziraphale said quietly as he slid carefully onto the couch beside the sleeping demon. Crowley had quite spectacularly splayed himself across nearly the entire thing, a jumble of arms and legs and small throw pillows. He made a small annoyed sound while the angel sat down next to him, and begrudgingly lifted his head to give Aziraphale enough space to sit and fold open a book in his left hand. Aziraphale slid his arm over the couch to try and gain a bit of traction, and was mildly (but pleasantly) surprised when one of Crowley’s hands untangled itself to reach up to his own. “Mmmph. S’nice.” Crowley murmured and arranged his head to rest on the angel’s knee. Aziraphale smiled and began the somewhat difficult task of flipping through the pages one-handedly.
