“Oh My God, They Killed Daniel! Those B*stards!” - Writing Radiation Exposure and Poisoning
I’m not putting a spoiler warning on this. You’re on tumblr
and its 2016. You know what
happens to Daniel.
JSYK: I haven’t taken physics since high school, and have never taken care of someone with radiation poisoning before, so much of this is taken from medical texts and other people’s accounts. If you have experience or questions, send me an ask and I’ll look into things further.

“The nausea will be followed by tremors, convulsions and something called ataxia. Surface tissue, brain tissue and internal organs will inflame and degrade- I believe that’s called necrosis. Now, based on the dose that I got, all that will happen within the next ten to fifteen hours. And if I don’t drown in my own blood and fluids first, I will bleed to death, and there is no medical treatment to prevent that.”
-Daniel Jackson explaining radiation poisoning, Stargate SG-1 “Meridian”
Ah, “Meridian,” that most classic of Stargate episodes that made whumpers everywhere think: “Hey, is there a non-lethal dose of radiation that could still be good for whump?”
I’m here to give you the good news: if you like long-term
whump, whump scares, or long awkward times during your whump fics where
characters feel perfectly fine but know they’re going to be in for an
inevitable world of hurt in a few weeks, radiation whump might be for you. Warning, however, that this is a very, very long post.
Bringing this back for anyone watching Chernobyl right now. Like I am.
…Holy crap.
