I want to show you a picture:

Guess who that is. Go on.

[NOTE: below the “keep reading” Is a very long, very hopeful, very happy story that also happens to contain mentions of dyphoria, self harm, emotional abuse, suicide, and transphobia. Not all of these things were experienced by me, but they are all necessary to explain what happened. Reader discretion is advised.]

Hey there! For your pride month asks, I'm also a trans guy, just started T last fall, and I was just wondering if you have like a general checklist of how to do your name change, and what order to change it in? (eg change on my car loan before with my work?) I'm in Utah so I know it won't be exactly the same as you, but I thought I'd ask. Also just any advice on top surgery and getting insurance to pay?

I’m sorry I’m not going to be thrillingly helpful for these- name change is very different place to place, so I would recommend starting by googling your city’s specific policies. I had to go to the courthouse and fill out paperwork, then wait for confirmation and file my name change with a local newspaper who had to publish it within 30 days, then bring proof that they’d published it back to the courthouse, pay $150, and then appear briefly before a judge, state my case, and he changed my name. The process overall took about 2 months. Once it was complete, I could go to the social security office and apply for a new SS card and the DMV where I could get a new driver’s license, with which I could do things like change over medical records and insurance, change my passport, and a variety of other things.

As for surgery- I had top surgery in 2014, which was back when most insurances in my area didn’t cover gender confirmation surgery (or didn’t without incredible requirements).  I was on my dad’s insurance and he wasn’t in a position to ask his company to cover gender confirmation surgery (Ohio is a state where that could have been grounds to fire someone, and actually still is) and so we ended up splitting the cost out of pocket, which was about $6,500 from Dr. Medalie in Cleveland (I think he moved somewhere else, though). I would start by calling your insurance company and asking about your policy’s coverage for gender confirmation. A lot of companies offer it now, and might be able to help you navigate it!

Here’s a more in-depth account of my transition.
