11th doctor: haha…. got u good…. *dies*
The Church: “There is no ‘patron saint of homoeroticism’.”
Every artist who has ever painted St. ‘Penetrated By Many Arrows’ Sebastian in the history of Western art: “Oh, no, of course not.”
Those artists’ boyfriends: [already stripping off their clothes to pose] “Ha ha so we’re agreed that is going to be as suggestive as we can possibly make it, right?”
The Church: “Wow, beautifully done. Exquisitely crafted. But uh… is he winking?”
Artist: “No he’s uh. He’s got one eye closed to symbolize how he’s half-dead?”
The Church: “Oh, brilliant symbolism. And his blissful expression is one of holy rapture, correct?”
Artist: “…yeah. Yeah, for sure. Holy rapture.”
The Church: “Uh technically we commissioned a painting of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. He survived the arrows. You know he was clubbed to death, right? That’s what makes him a martyr?”
Artist: “Yeah… but that’s not even a little bit sexy. How am I supposed to show off his shredded physique if he’s not got a jaunty angle to his hip and an alluring expression?”
The Church: “Your art is good so we’re going to pretend we didn’t hear you say that.”
on not waiting
Sometimes I find myself fantasizing about growing my own food, collecting rainwater, foraging, essentially living in the forrest. i get discouraged that it seems so unfeasible…i don’t even know cardinal directions!
But I have to remind myself, the fantasy isn’t really about living in a magical, self-sustaining witch-hut (although that’s dope). It’s about feeling empowered and independent, about reclaiming a relationship with the earth, about working with raw materials and building a safe space for myself.
And I already have what I need to do that, already. I live in a city, but I have a thriving container garden. I don’t know how to farm, but I’ve planted indigenous grasses in the barren corners of my neighborhood. I could go on, but what I’m saying is - always do what is within reach. Blogging and researching are great, but they will never empower you the way that hands-on experience will. If you are lucky enough to get the Ultimate Fantasy, all of that experience will come in handy. All of it will expedite your life, save you time, and help you flourish.
But most importantly, allowing yourself hands-on experience (even if it’s something as small as identifying a bird) will allow you to live your dream.
Don’t ever put “your dream” on the other-side of resources. It takes years of dedicated work and study and saving to accomplish anything. If you are reading this, you have access to the internet and five minutes to read it. THat’s enough to find something.
So just take a bite, just one little spoonful. Try the smallest version of what you want to do, on whatever scale you have access to. Don’t allow the fantasy to blind you to opportunity.
I’m not saying I set a Best of Queen album as our internal hold music for the weekend but … someone did on her way out of the office tonight. 😈
AHAHAHAHAHA well done.
TREKMATCH! # 267 - Star Trek’s “The Cage” vs 2019’s John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum
JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM
What in the freak is a parabellum exactly? I dunno, cuz the movie never explains. Anyway, this is the third movie about a master retired assassin who has killed about 200 people in the past week (it’s only been a week since chapter 1 I guess) out of revenge for his dog being killed. These movies have incredible action sequences, and this one definitely doesn’t disappoint, including an incredible opening half hour sequence. For me though, I just can’t stand the intricate secret assassin world these movies create - with all these rules and coins and hallowed grounds and councils it just comes across something an overconfident sophomore in an intro to creative writing class would come up with. They’re still definitely worth watching though if you’ve ever wondered if a horse stable would make a great action set piece (it does)! Also much has been made of the movie ripping off The Villainesses’ wild motorcycle chase but I think a) it’s more of an homage, and b) it’ll probably get more people to watch The Villainess which is good.
GRADE: C
STAR TREK - “The Cage”
A decade or so before Kirk took command of the Enterprise there was this regular dude named Captain Pike. Well, Captain wasn’t part of his name, but you get what I mean. Anyhoo, the ship gets a distress call and winds up finding a decades old crashed ship its survivor (spoiler). Pike gets pulled into a mind situation from some mind aliens who try to convince him to mate with the one woman who survived the crash, but he’s like “hell no to that.” The episode ends with (spoiler but this is fifty years old, come on) the revelation that Vina, the survivor can’t return with the Enterprise because she’s ugly. Huh??? I thought this was a utopia! Also she blames the Talosians for not knowing what a human looks like when rebuilding her, but maybe they coulda started with symmetrical like every creature out there, idk. So Pike and crew fly off for more adventures we’ll never see until a couple years from the episode when they meet the crew of Discovery.
GRADE: B-
Victory to Trek, but movies are still up at 134-133!
