Something about Good Omens

I just need to get this off my chest kiddos… So Good Omens obviously blew up bc of the series and I’ve been seeing everyone and their mother saying how Crowley and Aziraphale should have been made explicitly gay in the show, going as far as linking really explicit stuff to Neil Gaiman. Listen here… Neil said that he respects however you interpret his stories countless times, so feel free to do it, but nagging him about this book is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SITUATION. Yeah there have been new characters introduced into the show and yeah obviously those are changes and well if he changed those why couldn’t he just make’em gay?? FUCK this mentality honesly! This story was Neil’s AND Terry Pratchett’s. It just boggles my mind how people don’t understand that creating new elements to a story that you co-wrote to make it more detailed is not on the same level as CHANGING THE CHARACTERIZATION of one of the heroes that you CO-CREATED with someone without being able to consult with them. Terry was an amazing person with a beautiful mind and even though you can ASSUME things about his world views and if he would have changed anything in the main characters through his writing, you CAN’T. KNOW. FOR. SURE. And before anyone comes after me saying “well you don’t even like the pairing right? So who are you to say this?”. Buddy, I do. I do like the pairing. I like them both as a pairing, both as best friends. I just adore the characters themselves. They are so well written that no matter what their relationship is, I would have enjoyed them. But I also lost important people in my life and I am familiar with the feeling of not really wanting to change anything they’ve done without their consent. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that demanding representation is obviously an important conversation but I just wish that tumblr didn’t have this mentality at least for this book. Just please stick to your headcanons and leave Neil out of this.

A few canon things!

Trans: angels are “sexless”, meaning either a) they are also agender or b) they are choosing to identify and present as male despite their bodies not indicating such.

Rainbow: The rainbow flag is being used as an umbrella flag here; Aziraphale and Crowley do not identify as gay specifically.

Asexual: again, angels are “sexless”; in the book it says Aziraphale does not identify as “gay” because he is sexless, indicating that refers to sexuality as well as physicality.
