Thoughts on Thud!

  • First of all, it’s nice to be back in the watch series after branching off for a bit. I’ve missed the watch, and it’s been too long since I’ve seen Colon and Nobby’s singular shared brain cell in action.
  • A. E. Pessimal seems like the most bland person possible, though I’ve been informed he will be more interesting later on. He doesn’t even have a first name for fuck’s sake!!
  • I just love the concept of trolls having meetings in freezers. That whole scene was just 👌👌👌
  • SALLY! I AM IN LOVE! (I’m sure you could predict this, but what can I say? Vampires are sexy!)

I feel like I haven’t posted anything original in ages! There been very little going on since I left university, so here’s a slightly dodgy sketch of Commander Samuel Vimes, Duke of Ankh!

I’ve been reading a lot of Discworld recently and I have too much free time… So it culminated in this… It’s based on one of Paul Kidby’s pieces to ease me back into the swing of things and there are a lot of mistakes. However, I had fun and it’s something bookish related!

Something Vimes had learned as a young guard drifted up from memory. If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you’re going to die. So they’ll talk. They’ll gloat.
They’ll watch you squirm. They’ll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar.
So hope like hell that your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.

sam vimes has adhd:

1) addictive tendencies, something a lot of adhd people struggle with because It Gives Shiny Dopamine Real Quick

2) his addiction is explained as something like how his blood is below normal levels of alcohol/fluffy pink clouds, so he has to drink to catch up with everybody else to avoid cosmic horror - but he seems to overdo it (quite a bit) (oof)

3) relatedly, adhd people have a lower dopamine level than neurotypicals and tend to self medicate with caffeine, drugs, alcohol etc so……………. there we go, instant parallel

4) can’t regulate his emotions / can be a little impulsive when dealing with the fattened piglike bougioesie (i cant spell this word) and/or incorrigible criminals hidden in the institution

5) by which i mean he gets angry and says things everyone will regret seemingly without being able to stop himself, like there’s a motor running in him that he can’t stop

6) will run away from a conversation mid-sentence because He Had A Big Thought About A Crime (easily distracted, specifically by his….)

7) Hyperfocus: he hyperfixates on whatever case he’s working on, displaying that he isn’t motivated by deadlines or whatever, but by what specifically interests him

8) at the opposite end of the spectrum, he’s shit at organisation and memory (forgets birthdays sometimes, forgets special events are coming up unless they’re deeply ingrained in his memory, has a desk with decades worth of filing on it etc) EG: if it doesn’t pertain to his Special Interest / Hyperfixation / Hyperfocus whatever you wanna call it, he can’t focus on it

9) when he does focus on it he neglects himself - doesn’t sleep, eat, wash etc - more ADHD behaviours when presented with the big shiny Hyperfocus thing

10) thrives on the routine/structure of being in the Watch - having set times to walk around, having a daily timetable etc, and panics when faced with an unregulated, unorganised civilian life

11) until Sybil comes along and helps him restructure of course

12) unrelated but this list was nearly ordered 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 7 8 9 7 because i kept forgetting which number i was on. also i added bold bits for my fellow distracted dumbasses who like the funky letter flourishments

He wanted a nice quiet hour somewhere to put it all together. Personal isn’t the same as important? What sort of person could think like that? And it dawned on him that while Ankh in the past had had its share of evil rules, and simply bad rulers, it had never yet come under the heel of a good ruler. That might be the most terrifying prospect of all.

“Yes. Yes, of course. Um. Carrot?” Vimes blinked, to drive away suspicions that clamored for consideration. “We shouldn’t be too hard on Cruces. I hated the bastard like hell, so I want to be fair to him. I know what the gonne does to people. We’re all the same, to the gonne. I’d have been just like him.”

“No, captain. You put it down.”
