Good Omens (2019) managed to work in a fair number of gay jokes without becoming offensive. This is because the idea of a romantic relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale was not treated as ridiculous, but rather a fair (and, arguably, correct) assumption to draw based on their level of emotional entanglement and the ways in which they interact with each other. In this essay I will

i honestly think one of the reasons that i’ve fallen in love with good omens is because it’s so positive, and so different from the shitty directions that so many of my favorite stories have taken recently.

the mcu burned me (endgame); game of thrones burned me (season 8); star wars burned me (TLJ)…all of these fandoms have just been making me feel like shit instead of giving me joy, and then good omens came along. and it gave me a self-contained, well-written and character-driven story, with a fun plot, a happy ending, and a beautiful love story between the two main (and queer) characters.

and not only is the show amazing, but the fans are so supportive and happy as well! the good omens fandom is just out here here appreciating crowley and aziraphale’s relationship in whatever form it takes. you see them as ace? great! you see them as aro? great! you see them as sexual and romantic beings! great! the only prerequisite is that they love each other!

there’s also a remarkable lack of gatekeeping amongst good omens fans! i haven’t read the book (yet), but i’ve felt so welcomed by book & show fans - i don’t think i’ve seen a single gatekeeping, “you’re not a real fan if you haven’t read the book!” post.

meanwhile, the marvel fandom is torn about endgame, to the point where people who loved it are sending abusive and hateful messages to people who are critical of it, and TLJ is still one of the most divisive star wars movies ever. most people agree that season 8 of GOT sucked, but the relationship of the creators (D&D) to the fans has crumbled, and a lot of fans (including me) still feel like the creators spit in our faces with that finale.

tl;dr - good omens is a pure, well-written, and joyous show, and the fandom is one of the most positive that i’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of, and it’s made me a lot happier than most other pieces of “geek media” nowadays. so, thank you to neil, terry, michael, david, and the entire good omens cast & crew, as well as all of the fans! you guys are awesome!

good omens (i don't really want to get into Discourse with other people) (so for the other fandoms i'm gonna use tag filler) mine rant anti endgame anti got marvel avengers 4 game of thrones creative shit 1k bad endings

You know what, I’m gonna say it.

Crowley and Aziraphale being asexual in cannon and them having and enjoying sex are not conflicting ideas. There are sex-positive and sex-neutral asexuals. These are characters who do not need to eat, or listen to music, or indulge in anything related to human forms of pleasure, but do so anyway because they like the way it makes them feel. Theres literally zero reason why sex can’t be one of those pleasures, even without sexual attraction (because sexual attraction does not equal sex drive or even enjoyment of the act).

I’ve seen a lot of posts (hell, I’ve even reblogged some of them) about choosing between headcannoning Crowley and Aziraphale as asexual or headcannoning them as sexually active, but you know what? Theres literally no need to choose. They can be both at the same time.

Headcannon whatever you like, but as an asexual who’s been made to feel guilty for even liking to read/write smut fic (because “real” asexuals must eschew anything sexual, according to some people), I’m done feeling like I have to choose with these characters. They can be ace, they can be sexually active, they can be both at the same time if I want and those are equally valid interpretations.

good omens ineffable husbands if i sound angry its not at anyone specific im just frustrated with how asexuals are viewed by society at large not all aces are sex repulsed and thats valid my thoughts

Okay, so maybe I’m an idiot for not realising this sooner, but the reason War has the flaming sword— Aziraphale’s flaming sword— is because War is actually the embodiment of something created by humans, and the flaming sword was the first weapon humanity was ever given.

The one that started it all, was given to them by Aziraphale.

It just really puts a new perspective on that conversation by the gate…

Crawly: *is instrumental in giving humans the ability to choose between good and evil, which will later allow Adam the AntiChrist to choose his own destiny and prevent Armageddon* “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if I did the right thing and you did the wrong thing?”

Aziraphale: *Becomes indirectly responsible for all war ever, including the weapons of mass destruction that will later go on to almost be used in Armageddon* “Ha! Yeah, thank God that’ll never happen.”

it's a shame that war was so busy that day on the air base that she didn't have time to say hi to her dad war good omens good omens war aziraphale crowley flaming sword good omens tv show good omens book good omens analysis good omens spoilers go spoilers

I really can’t stop thinking about how the only reason we have this show at all is because of a promise Neil made to Terry, because they had been trying to get it made for years and it kept falling through and then Terry died and Neil absolutely was not going to do it without him but Terry asked him to make sure it got made, so Neil put aside everything he felt about making it without Terry and did it anyway, and not only that but he wrote the adaptations (which as far as I know isn’t something he has done for his other works) and took on the role of showrunner aka a big job that’s a lot of work, and literally didn’t do the thing he does, didn’t write, for almost two years to make sure he could make this show the way it was supposed to be, the way Terry would want it, he did all of that out of love for his friend and to keep his promise. So we’re all losing our minds over these two occult/ethereal beings whose love for each other is as present throughout human history as the sun and stars, whose connection to each other is as fundamental as the earth itself and persists throughout the limitations of time, but the only reason we have that angel and demon and their love is because of the love Neil has for Terry, his own love that transcends the limitations of time, and he took that love and made it into this show he didn’t even want to make once Terry was gone but Terry asked him to so he did anyway, he took the sheer enormity of love he felt for his friend - and it must be enormous, just look at all he did - and he made it into this show, he made a show about transcendental love out of his own transcendental love, and it just feels like something precious and it feels like such a gift and I just don’t want to overlook that and I really want to say: thank you, Neil. Thank you for sharing that love with us.

good omens the details of this are all based on my memory of interviews i’ve read so keep that in mind
