The Best Line I Ever Cut (What’s Yours?)

We’ve all had to cut lines we love. Kill our darlings, as the saying goes. This was the most painful deletion for me, from Revelation (One True Thing).

All of this was an unnecessary risk to his person, of course, but it seemed that Bashir, through years of stubbornly believing Garak capable of goodness and nobility despite all evidence to the contrary, had finally created a truth.

Dancers’ Feet and DS9 Canon

I’d like to set the record straight on this, if I may. I’ve seen tidbits floating around the fandom here and there saying Bashir has a foot fetish, citing the line in “Armageddon Game” about his ex the ballet dancer having exquisite feet.

I am not a dancer. However, I work at a ballet school, so I can tell you with some authority that ballet dancers have the worst feet. Really. Especially the women, who are standing (and hopping!) on the tips of their toes. Their feet are not pretty at all when the shoes are off. I have actually heard a grandfather say he wouldn’t touch a dancer’s feet with a six-foot pole, it’s that bad.

In ballet speak, good feet basically means feet which do weird stuff that looks liable to cause injury, like curve a lot. It doesn’t really make sense to anyone else. (I work at a school and I often wonder what these people are thinking.)

So sure, you can say he has a thing for feet if you really want, but I don’t think so. Because a dancer’s feet are not attractive.
