If you don’t mind me asking, could you verify a translation? I read at some point that “iw HAty.s mAi” means something like “she has the heart of a lion,” but i have never been able to find a source to back it up. Is it correct? If not, what would be the correct translation?

rudjedet answered:

Shit I’m so sorry, I was looking at this the other day but it completely slipped my mind!

Since HA.ty can, apart from “heart”, also mean “best oil” or “foremost” depending on the spelling, the usual warning that without the actual hieroglyphs I have to add a proviso for accuracy applies.

That having been said, iw HA.ty=s mAi, when rendered like this:

image

means “her heart is a lion”. I would not translate iw HA.ty=s mAi as “she has the heart of a lion”. As an aside, the participle iw here doesn’t get used too often in a statement like this, although there are instances of extended adverbial main clauses that are introduced by iw.

After talking it over with @thatlittleegyptologist here are two other ways to render this that come closer to the translation you provided. One is the participial statement nts HA.ty=s mi mAi:

image

one (f) who has the heart of a lion”,

the other the phrase m-a=s HA.ty mAi:

image

she is in the possession of a heart as a lion”.

neil i have a Very Important Question for you re: the earth being a libra. the bit of good omens that talks about the date of creation refers to "the heaven and the earth"; if heaven didn't exist prior to that, does that imply it's not just the creation of the world, but also the day that all angels and demons were brought into existence? thus making all angels and demons also libras?

What a fun question. No, in the world of Good Omens the heaven that was created on the Second Day, when God created the heavens and the Earth were the heavens as a synonym for the sky and everything material above, and that meanwhile, off in Heaven, the angels and the demons had already been beavering away for millions of years working on the Creation, had had a War in Heaven and a Fall of the Angels, and suchlike a long time before God said “Let there be light…”

I have nothing to prove to you

It’s hillarious how many dudebros were upset by this scene saying that she should have fought him to “prove herself” like…how do you sit through a film and Completely Miss the Whole Entire Point of a Scene/Character Arc So Completely

It’s like watching Return of the Jedi and being like “Wait why didn’t Luke just kill Vader like the Emperor wanted him to?”

HOW WOULD YOU EVEN PREDICT THIS

Find a way to reschedule your grandparents death.

This is when I take it to their boss and make it their problem. Professors do have people who oversee them and if you feel like you’re being treated unfairly you should report them.

Okay, guys, let me just explain this: the solution for “a shitty unpredictable thing happened to you? crap” in a course like this?

It’s the drop. The drop exam is what you use for your dead grandmother. It’s very sad that your grandmother is dead and the funeral is the day of the exam; that test will be your drop test then! Feel really crappy and can’t come to class for a quiz? That’s really a shame; we drop your lowest assignment, so that can be your drop!

The idea is that you can manage your own accommodation for stuff that isn’t ongoing and is truly one-time-only, without necessarily requiring an instructor to proctor and administer (or grade) additional assignments. You don’t have to ask for permission. It’s already granted! Missing one assignment won’t hurt you, because the ability to miss one assignment or one exam is built into the class structure itself.

It’s like the difference between having a tiny elevator that you can use if you call a handyman and ask for it when you can’t climb stairs… and building in a ramp, so that you can do it yourself.

Generally, for ongoing things like health crises (mental or physical), instructors will encourage students to talk to disability services or student crisis support. Those folks usually do the vetting (so we’re not staring at you, trying to figure out if your granny really did die) and also, at many places for an ongoing crisis, will go ahead and contact all your instructors, not just one, and walk them through whatever support you need. (Disability accommodation will not do this, but they will give you a letter with a list of reasonable accommodations that you then bring to the instructor and walk through.) These services are often waaaaaay overstrained–I was just speaking to an instructor at my university the other day and she was complaining that there aren’t nearly enough places for students who need to take exams on a quiet room away from everyone else offered by disability, so she has to encourage her students to sign up within the first week of class–but they do exist, and if you need help, you should talk to them.
