Our factory is trying a new method of production
It is profitable, as you surely know.
A side effect of our methods is the toxic smog in the air,
although you can’t deny that we create jobs!
And it is hardly our fault that the singing birds die,
It’s the kind of thing singing birds do.
you must learn to endure a tiny bit off chronic poisoning,
If you wish to have a strong industry!

translation of chorus of the song “när småfåglar dör” [when the singing birds dies] by Allan Edwall.

translation to english by me.

here are more of my favorite pages from “A Golden Guide to North American Insects,” a tiny book that I can remember carrying around and drawing things out of before I actually knew how to read. I think it might have shaped me as a person.

The antlion, mealybugs, tiger beetle larva and the sheep “tick” in particular all totally astonished me as a child and I remember trying to draw them the most.

Of those, I’ve still only ever seen the mealybugs, antlion, and adult tiger beetles in person.
