that rosemary is tough when it's in a spot it likes is SO TRUE. i live in england and we had an infestation of rosemary beetles in the area a couple of years ago. they were all over our neighbours' lavender and completely demolished it. we thought we'd probably end up losing our old rosemary bush, but she basically just laughed at the beetles and came through with minimal damage.

There’s a saying in rural England that rosemary thrives in the homes of strong women. This varies in folk application today, usually as jokes - usually as a misogynistic joke about showing “who wears the trousers” in the house (in which a thriving rosemary supposedly means a house where the dominant woman is in charge of the oppressed man). Oddly, when my mother-in-law went on a long solo trip around the world, leaving my father-in-law in charge of the house, their ancient and thriving rosemary tree actually died.
