This is my brilliant, perfect Niece, settling in to read her current favorite book, “Chu.” It’s about a little panda with a big sneeze and was written by one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. Niece is so in love with the series that she must have all three books read to her each night at bedtime, and she absolutely must have at least least one to take with her in to her crib. We watched her page through it on the video monitor.

*teary-eyed* Loves Gaiman, sleeps with books. Just like her auntie. I’m so proud!

Avoid video games that use extrinsic motivation. A video game should at least mostly rely on intrinsic motivation, meaning that the playing of the game itself is the fun part, not the reward you get for playing the game. If you don’t enjoy the gameplay, but you want to earn lootboxes, you’ve fallen into the intentionally exploitative system operating within so many games nowadays, and you need to find another game, because you’re not having fun.

It doesn’t sound serious, but this kind of thing can make depression way worse if you’ve already got depression.

This post got me to stop playing Overwatch and I’m eternally grateful.

note-a-bear

That’s also a core difference between a game trying to exploit the human brain’s tendency toward gambling addiction and a game that exists to entertain.

Like, it may sound like I’m reaching, but op described (pretty closely) the operation of gambling addictions. It’s also why the depression aspect is so real. You’re feeling a withdrawal, of a sort, when you can’t play the game.

Tumblr can also be like this sometimes. Scrolling, scrolling, waiting for something to activate the dopamine, the right post, a nice notification, *something*…

I definitely notice it when I’m depressed, and if I’m smart, I close the computer and go to bed.

azireffable

aus where aziraphale’s a professor own my ass … crowley visiting aziraphale just before his class has ended, leaving the students wondering who the handsome stranger in the back of the class is.

there’s a bit of a buzz about it, he’s very handsome and his presence seems to shift aziraphale’s mood just a bit, like he’s gone all light and airy. could easily be misread as nervousness. a rumor spreads that’s only half joking, that he’s some mafia boss and their professor fell into the wrong crowd a decade back.

it remains a mystery until a few weeks later, when someone enters mr. fell’s office to have a chat with him. crowley’s already there and he only glances at the student, turns and kisses aziraphale on the cheek before bidding a quick farewell. “i’ll pick you up for dinner.”

mystery solved. but the students spend the first ten minutes of the next class period bursting with questions, “are you married, mr. fell?” and aziraphale is happy to indulge them for a few minutes or so until, “please, let’s carry on with our lessons.”
