“i am a monument to all your sins” is such a fucking raw line for a villain it’s amazing that it came from halo, a modernish video game, and not some classical text or mythos

biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

classic texts have nothing on the crazy people come up with in modern times tbh

the class difference visible between two swedish 1850s women dressing up in their best clothes and most fashionable outfits.

At the top, the 1850s dress of a upper class women. The notes from the musuem points out the dress was most likely aquired in France

The two bottom pictures. An outfit sewn and woven by Kristina Lindström. She got yarn as part of the wage of working as a domestic worker (piga), and from that “wage yarn”, she created this outfit. The musuems notes points out that the outfit shows many influences from the fashion of 1850s. That is, Kristina Lindström were making herself what was considred a cool outfit in the 1850s, but not having the money which is needed to create the top pictures outfit, she needed to express the fashion trends of the 1850s with the means avaible to her (= that yarn she got as a wage, her own ability to make clothes and maaaaybe helpful patterns)

Do you know anything about what kind of loom she would have had?

norsesuggestions

I am unsure. I know a musuem i worked at had this type of loom in its 18th century farmer home

image

But i dont know if the machine was wholy correct for the era. Quick Google appear to say anyway that this sort started be used from the Middle 18th century and forward in sweden.

[a drawing of this sort of loom. I believe it might be called foot-treadle floor loom in english. In swedish golvvävstol]

I cant swear that she would have acces to it though, nor that her clothes were weaved using this sort though

Love when my cat flings himself into the air after a toy, but he has no style. Straight up ragdoll physics.

One day i want to take a video of Yardstick straight-up hurling himself into the void. Cats have no conception that there is a future. There is just now and the jingly toy.

Your cat’s name is Yardstick?

He has three feet.

Either we now know why Yardstick has three feet, or Yardstick has already stared the reaper in the eye, and has no fear of him.

In the eye, you say?

Cute weekend call story

mdrambles

This weekend I was on call in our hematology-oncology ward and I met a 6-year-old girl who got VERY shy with new people. She wouldn’t even speak a word to me the first day, but got her mother to communicate that, like all the other new people that got involved with her daughter, I had to sign her doll so that I would be deemed trustworthy. I asked my patient to pick a spot for me, which she did after almost a full minute of giggling. Later that evening I poked my head in to say goodbye before I left, and she actually said, “Bye, see you tomorrow!”

The next day, I went in to see her and she was a total chatterbox! At around lunchtime, I was checking back in with her and she was eating some chocolate covered almonds. (When I asked, she said she was not a fan of chocolate covered raisins. This kid clearly knows what’s up.)

She told me about how she sometimes eats the chocolate off of the almond, then the almond after. Her favourite is when she tries to do that but the almond comes loose, so she ends up having a bite of chocolate with the almond, and then gets to have a last bite of just chocolate afterward. Her mom came in as we were chatting about this, and my patient interjected, “BUT also, I like to pretend they’re eggs,” and proceeded to pretend to crack a chocolate almond off the edge of her cup.

I laughed and told her they wouldn’t hatch if she sat on them. She looked at me like I just said something absurd and replied, “There would be chocolate all over the bed.” Then she proceeded to drop almost a whole handful of chocolate almonds into her lap in the bed and we both cracked up.
