Most of the time archaeologists get to seem like science rock stars - possible treasure discoveries, heavy drinking, the whole thing.

But I gotta be honest here.

I’m also a member of the “Brick of the Day” Facebook group.

Where I and other members post photographs of old bricks, “like” posts about other people’s old bricks, and are sternly scolded by group admin if we do not ensure that our posts include the locations of the bricks and transcriptions of any marks on the bricks.

One.

They presented to my office the day after hospital discharge (for chest pain and shortness of breath) looking like death warmed over. ER had checked a dimer 3 days before and it was negative. The patient’s symptoms all pointed to PE but no CTA was done. Oh, and did I mention the patient had a recent DVT? And that they had stopped their anticoagulant early?

I sent the patient back to the ER and asked specifically for a CTA.

Bilateral main pulmonary artery PEs.

Don’t trust a negative dimer on a high probability patient, folks.
