Something I think is compelling and well done about Odo’s storyline is that he is “born” in a dark place, where he is forced to live the first years in a vulnerable state, as an experiment. Then, when he walks out on that, it is still a dark world outside. He becomes very tight and keeps his physical and emotional vulnerability kept inward. He puts a lot of value in keeping up appearances of what is expected of him, or what people are most familiar with.
When Terok Nor becomes DS9, the world becomes a little lighter as time passes (literally–Terok Nor episodes are dark blue in visual tone). His story starting there is still turbulent, but toward the end, he is asked to show himself as he really is and he turns into light.
