So, amusingly enough, after just having replied to a question about “Wii-related injuries” a few days ago, I had a case of Acute Thoraco-Abdomino Wii-tis in my urgent care today.
10-year old kid complained to his mom that his “chest and stomach hurt, especially when he coughed”. Mom scurried in with him, her parent-noia conjuring up visions of “appendicitis” or “pneumonia” or “heart attack.” When I walked into the exam room, the kid was sitting there quite happily, not coughing, not clutching his stomach. My Cranquis-Sense ™ tingled, in a good way: “This kid isn’t in any danger.” Now, time to do some detective work!
But it didn’t take long to figure it out. He said his P.E. class at school just started playing Dance Dance Revolution on the Wii a couple days ago. I asked him to show me what kind of motions he would do when playing the game: he stood up, started to fling his arms over his head while flailing his legs like a drunken Celtic dancer, and cried out “OWWW!”
Case closed. Rx: Ibuprofen, stretching, massage, heat, and no, I’m sorry son, but this doesn’t mean you get to stay home from school. ;)
