My Ao3 is CatKing_Catkin, but let’s face it, that’s the one you all knew already.

Hi Wayfaring! So I’m looking into medical schools in the U.S. and my biggest worry is how I’m going to pay for school and living expenses. I looked into medical schools for U.S. students outside of the country and it’s looking more affordable. But my only concern is how I’m going to get residency. What would you suggest?

Think about this: do you want to go to medical school, or do you want to be a doctor? You want to be a doctor, right? So go somewhere that gives you a solid chance of matching into the specialty you want so that you can actually practice medicine. Loans are available. Repayment programs are available. Even if school is cheaper elsewhere, it will still be crazy expensive to pay off those loans if you don’t match.

Med school is crazy expensive pretty much everywhere. Everyone gets loans. If you match and get a job you should be able to pay those loans. If you don’t match, you have to consider how you will pay those loans back.

You may also want to consider a military program once you get in to med school (and have a good chance of matching AND loan repayment) or something like the national health service corps which offers a lot of loan repayment opportunities.
