“A British bookshop chain held a vote to find the country’s favourite book. It was The Lord of the Rings. Another one not long afterwards, held this time to find the favourite author, came up with J.R.R. Tolkien. The critics carped, which was expected but nevertheless strange. After all, the bookshops were merely using the word favourite. That’s a very personal word. No one ever said it was a synonym for best. But a critic’s chorus hailed the results as a terrible indictment of the taste of the British public, who’d been given the precious gift of democracy and were wasting it on quite unsuitable choices. There were hints of a conspiracy amongst the furry-footed fans. But there was another message, too. It ran: ‘Look, we’ve been trying to tell you for years which books are good! And you just don’t listen! You’re not listening now! You’re just going out there and buying this damn book! And the worst part is that we can’t stop you! We can tell you it’s rubbish, it’s not relevant, it’s the worst kind of escapism, it was written by an author who never came to our parties and didn’t care what we thought, but unfortunately the law allows you to go on not listening! You are stupid, stupid, stupid!’ And once again, no one listened. Instead, a couple of years later, a national newspaper’s Millennium Masterworks poll produced five works of what could loosely be called ‘narrative fiction’ among the top fifty ‘masterworks’ of the last thousand years, and, yes, there was The Lord of the Rings again.”

— Terry Pratchett, “Cult Classic” (A Slip of the Keyboard)
(Still burning mad that at least one critic did the same exact kind of carping about Pratchett’s body of work being praised by its fans, shortly after his death.)

I stumbled on an article last night where some douche was ranting about how mad he was that, in the wake of Terry’s death, people were mourning and calling him a great writer when they should have been reading something sublime like Bukowski.

In the first paragraph he said he’d never read anything by Pratchett and never intended to, which is pretty typical of that kind of angry elitism.

As someone who has been deeply impacted by Terry’s ideas about character and storytelling, that article made me so mad. Livid. Terry Pratchett levels of righteous fury.

Can I tell you how happy and unsurprised I am that Terry himself wrote such a lovely takedown of that snobbish, splainy mentality.

A thing being popular doesn’t automatically make it bad, and fantastic elements don’t make a work of literature into not-literature.

you know what’s wild is that all these crazy standards we hold ourselves to are things that we don’t even value in another person? like i’ve never been like “wow I love that this friend of mine is too proud to ask for help and never complains about their feelings” or “my favorite quality about this friend is that they get straight A’s and never get overwhelmed and has never told me about a problem” or “i love that this friend has never been wrong about anything or slipped up and said something embarrassing once in their life” and yet here we are, pushing ourselves past our limits for and beating ourselves up over slipups of things that our friends probably wouldn’t even rank in the top 50 reasons they like us

Oh fuck I just realised why I’ve been feeling so shitty this past week.

I’ve forgotten to take my meds all week,,,

Bro no judgment. I’ve always been adherent and then I get into residency and it all goes out the window. Imagine the shame of the pharmacist discussing how many doses she missed to her primary care provider! Who knows I’m a pharmacist!

Oh god I’m demonstrating an OSCE soon

Damn these gentle pharmacist hands. You have to be willing to tap someone to get a reflex but no! I’m a consistent feathery touch person! I mean I’m good with giving shots but when it comes to things requiring prodding and so forth? Feather fingers.

I don’t know how you people manage to do incisions and like place lines when I have to power through the emotional turmoil of the pinch of the blood pressure cuff every single time.

I get it done but at what cost????

pharmblr drama for humor i’ll be fine these hands were made for the pestle

Just as a casual mention, I’m gonna be cutting down on terrible or distressing news content in both consumption and output

I’ve already tried to do more of the latter. I just kind of want to have a decent time and not be exhausted on every outlet i engage with daily, you know? I see news and dramas and i work in a parole office. I’m full up on horrible before I get to Tumblr.

Though i guess because this is part of a personal initiative to clean up my functioning as a human, you’ll still see the parental emotional abuse type posts, because picking that horse shit apart is connected to everything else

Anyway, if I end up unfollowing or something it’s just because I’m maxed out on Dire Bleak and Awful (…in the real world. Do not think for a second that I’m going to stop putting blood and tar all over my drawings and dolls) not any other factor.

Do I have to take the flu vaccine even I haven’t been sick in years not even catching a cold ? The last time I’ve been vaccinated when I was 16 . -anon

OK, you don’t *have* to get a flu shot, but you definitely should. Everyone who can get one should get one, even if you never get sick. Here’s why:

1) THERE’S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING. I had never been 32 years old before, but ok look, here I am. New stuff happens all the time. Like the flu.

2) There are people out there who are at higher risk of getting seriously ill with the flu who need the herd immunity (i.e. the rest of us not getting the flu) to help protect them. Babies, elderlies, preggies, and folks with chronic diseases and immune deficiencies need us to help keep them well. When a young healthy person gets the flu they may just have a sucky week, but these other folks may end up on ventilators in the ICU. It’s life or death for them.

3) I don’t know how old you are, nonny, but consider your environment. If you’re in a dorm or classroom situation or if you work in a job that requires contact with LOTS of different people, you’re going to be more likely to be exposed to the flu. Because people are dirty and gross. So you can protect yourself and the people you interact with by getting your vaccination.

4) Can you afford to take a week off of work or classes? Will your grades survive? Will you be able to pay rent? Can you pass organic chemistry if you’re sick on finals week? Are you planning a vacation that you need those days for? This is a huge issue for many people. Think about the future and protect yourself. Granted, you CAN still get the flu even if you had a flu shot (I did, last year), but it’s typically a much milder case than you would have had otherwise. In my case, I missed 2 days of work instead of a week.

5) It’s a dead virus in the shot. It absolutely cannot give you the flu. And serious side effects to the flu shot are pretty rare.

6) Most insurances (including Medicaid and most ACA plans) pay for it. And if they don’t, lots of pharmacies and grocery stores offer perks like gift cards or gas points for getting the shot.

pharmdup

If you’ve ever felt a little feverish and achey for a day or two after getting the flu shot, it’s not because you got the flu. Your body was just injected with a dead virus, which your immune system used to create new antibodies to protect you. Feeling a little feverish for a day while that was happening meant the flu shot was working just fine.

Also pro tip: giving shots is often the only time pharmacists actually touch patients so we’re notoriously gentle. We are even teased about how gentle we are in our physical assessments by the other healthcare workers. If you’re scared of shots, see if the pharmacist feels less scary to you.
