  • flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship!!!!!
  • jetsam is part of a ship that is purposely cast overboard or jettisoned!!!!
  • lagan is goods or wreckage that is lying on the bottom of the ocean!!!!!

So this means Tolkien screwed up when he named one of the chapters in LOTR “Flotsam and Jetsam” which covers the wreck of Isengard after it was attacked by the Ents. This is very disillusioning as he was a linguist.

I was listening to an art podcast and I heard someone use “creative hibernation” as a term to describe a period of time when your creative energy and flow of ideas is slowing down.

Honestly, it sounds so much better than “art block”. To me, “creative hibernation” sounds less like a negative thing and more like an organic part of the creative process.

“Art block” sounds very definite. They sound like something you MUST actively fight against to break them down in order to continue. “Hibernation” on the other hand sounds more like a thing that happens every now and then but that will go away on its own when it’s time. It’s a stage of gathering energy for the next creative pursuit. Art block on the other hand is an artificial, mental block that actually just seems to solidify the more you treat it like an obstacle to get around.

All creative people go through this type of slowing down all the time and it is completely alright. I thought I would share this because I think the right kind of mentality is actually one of the most important things of recovering your creative energy.

trying to see it this way but I'm so worried about this

the tv show seems to understand that Vic Fontaine is kind of a slave, or some kind of created AI-type intelligence that deserves more than just the lightbulb treatment

but the characters don’t seem to understand that?

and the dissonance is super strange.

I’m weirdly protective of AI.

I think it was done that way specifically to show off the disconnect between Deep Space Nine and Voyager. On Voyager you had the Doctor becoming this important self-directed character over the course of seasons 4 & 5 primarily. Those seasons aired right as Vic was about to become a thing. People who watched both Voyager and Deep Space Nine got to see how progressive and egalitarian the Voyager crew were compared to Starfleet Personnel still in the Alpha Quadrant. For the writers and producers the question of holographic rights was already on the table on Voyager, and more or less settled for them and for the shows but not always for the characters. Even late in Voyager the doctor winds up arguing about his rights both with members of the Voyager crew and with people in the Alpha Quadrant. When you take that into consideration the dichotomy between holographic rights and holographic slavery becomes a bit starker.

The “friend zone” and unrequited love are not the same thing. Unrequited love is, “I love you, you don’t love me in that same way, I am sad about that.” The “friend zone” is, “I love you, you don’t love me in that same way, you have therefore wronged me.”

Unrequited love is, “My unilateral crush is my problem.” The “friend zone” is, “My unilateral crush is your problem.”

Unrequited Love is sad. The friendzone is creepy.
