Swedens historical relationship with cows is interesting though. There is this long tradition of genuine care for cows and their well being

A exemple of this love of cows, are that they, opposed to many other farm animals, often have individual names in historical records.

That is, they wrote these lists of what farms owned, for taxes porpuses. And while some animals, would be like

5 chicken

1 cat

2 pigs

Cows would often be seperataly named in the records. With their individual names and all. Such it was too for dogs and horses (rarely for cats, but happened).

But anyway, it’s interesting that some animals are just “animals” while horses, dogs and cows, appear to also be seen as a bit. More. Than that. Useful farming animals yes, but also. A bit more of what we today would perhaps call “a pet bond”.

Did not stop them from eating the cows haha, but like. They loved their cows alot, in general.

Which also! Can still be seen in how very much of sweden farm animal welfare been focused on the welfare of cows and horses

Like pigs are treated fairly well in sweden, compared to many countries, too.(although could be better) But, the cows. The cow love knows no bounds

Like, think about the different level of public outrage over bad cow farming practices in sweden, and bad farming practices with chicken.

Both are complex animals, with complex needs. But cows. Cows create alot stronger emotions among a larger public in sweden

(i personally hope chicken welfare one day will to be seen as important as cows in sweden, but atm they are not)

aquarianconstellations

the other day someone posted pics from the reddit page r/zerocarbs where these fools only ate meat and 0 vegetables or fruits and all the posts were about various symptoms of scurvy. i died when one literally read ‘i don’t want to start the vitamin C debate again but’

THE VITAMIN C DEBATE

jemthecrystalgem

So many of these posts are like “I’m not seeing the symptoms of scurvy! In fact, I’m losing weight!” like:

“People may experience:

….

Also common: bruising, coiled hair, failure to thrive, irritability, muscle weakness, swollen gums, or weight loss”

Scurvy isn’t JUST gum bleeding ya dips! Go to a fucking doctor.

mycravatundone

so many of them are complaining about serious joint pain and im like. it’s a major symptom, my guy

youreyesaregems

Honestly I can’t wait for Jordan Peterson to get scurvy from his weird all-beef diet

bubobubosibericus

@biologyweeps the horrible health ideas just keep piling up, don’t they?!

biologyweeps

i cannot believe that in the year of our lord 2018 people still don’t fucking know that vitamin C is in fact vital to your continued existence, someone let me off this ride.

palindromordnilap

I think that was already featured on your blog, too. I guess you can get SOME vitamin C from raw meat? But then that’s its own health issue.

biologyweeps

yeah it has to be raw, and not all meat is equal in vitC amounts but bacon (which is… very much processed to the point where the VitC amount probably is close to zero) is certainly not on that list

and also yes to that being its own health issue what with parasites and such

Pittsburgh shooting follow-up: HIAS

historicity-was-already-taken

As many of you following the story may know, the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter specifically named the organization HIAS, or, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, as one bullet point in their list of grievances against Jews.

For those of you who have not heard of it, HIAS was founded in ~1882 to provide aid and resettlement assistance to Eastern European Jews fleeing pogroms and other anti-Semitic forms of violence. It continued working to rescue, resettle, and provide aid to Jews through about the 1960s, in the later years working with Middle Eastern and North African Jewry, and Jews behind the Iron Curtain.

In the 1970s HIAS expanded its operations to provide the same services to any group in need of humanitarian aid, rescue, resettlement, government advocacy, etc. HIAS has worked with refugee populations from, but not limited to, Vietnam, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Bosnia, Egypt, and Syria. You can learn more about HIAS, its history and activities here.

The Pittsburgh shooter was not a person who valued this type of work, especially as it meant bringing non-white people from non WhiteAmericanChristian backgrounds into the United States,

If you would like to support HIAS and its important work, you may donate here. Further, if you would like to support the maintenance and preservation of HIAS’ legacy and work, please consider contributing to the American Jewish Historical Society to ensure that these important archives will exist for researchers in perpetuity.

Notice of Conflict of Interest: I work for the American Jewish Historical Society, and I spent a little over a year working with the HIAS papers before shifting to my current role.

things are hard right now for Jewish people all over the world– if your synagogue has a donation page link it on this post and i’ll spread it around.

to start: here is the official gofundme to help the Tree of Life synagogue pay for building damage and help the people effected.

my synagogue is doing some really great accessibility and inclusivity work right now and works with a lot of local charities–you can donate to them here
