That’s the crucial difference between this SHOW (and This Sherlock) with that other one. EMPATHY. say it with me now.
Like this show deals with lots of uncomfortable stuff, and does it in a way that doesn’t cheapen or trivialize the subject most of the time, and actually shows its main characters not being judgmental dbags when they are dealing with it. The characters care about each other, and the writers seem to care a ton about the characters, and good lord is it readily apparent.
(for what it’s worth I think DS9 is the same way. I can’t think of a ton of other examples off the top of my head where the characters are so decidedly NOT trivialized for the sake of plot development. Maybe Parks and Recreation although as a comedy show it does so quite differently.)
