Adorable sparkle face
I encountered this great drawing while browsing some 12th-century books in the library this morning. You are looking at the face of a monk: note the hairline and the bald top of his head. It is drawn inside the letter Q to provide the reader some entertainment. The red paint shows signs of corrosion, which gives the letter its silvery appearance, the lovely sparkles on both sides of the face. Because of the large smoky tail of the letter it seems to be on the move, as if given speed by a mini jet engine inside. The pilot, looking spooked, has mixed feelings about the empty margin his sparkly Q-plane is heading for, the wordless abyss that nobody ever returns from. It all makes for an entertaining moment on the medieval page, for readers then and now.
