How things change in a few days…

Patients are dying of Covid once again.

Nursing home patients are getting hit hard, once again.

Most worrisome, there is now a recurrence / resurgence of patients dying in the ED (sometimes unnoticed), just like Spring 2020.

Now, there are many patients with Covid who were vaccinated / boosted.  In general, they have mild illness.

The only thing that stops Covid is… the weather, at least in the ED.  We had a snowstorm last week, and for the first time in weeks, the census in the ED did not rise above 100 during my shift.

We continue to be even more short-staffed than usual.  A common patient complaint is “I ring the bell but no one comes”.  Hospital staff continue to test positive.  Undoubtedly, many are working while infected.

One day last week, my patients’ Covid positivity rate was 100%.

By my estimate, >50% of “stroke codes” have Covid, not stroke.

There are 40+ admitted patients in the ED on an average day.  Most have Covid.  We have about 50 rooms in our ED.

We had a major MCI.  Consider what it’s like to drop 20 critically-ill patients in an ED that is short on space and short on staff.  Our residents, nurses, and techs were heroic.

A friend sent me a book written in 1966 called “The Making of Star Trek,” and I can already tell there are going to be many gems inside, like this picture! I love their NASA-visiting outfits.

(Yes, the caption misspells Kelley’s last name, but they get it right pretty much everywhere else.)
