SO, I have been wading in Good Omens meta for months now, and I often see things come up that Neil has actually addressed in asks. Trouble is, his ask box is deep and intimidating, and since season 2 was announced all the pre-season 2 asks have basically been buried. But I went hunting long ago for basically anything GO-related and I took screenshots of a bunch. So I thought I’d present them here, roughly organized, in text form, for the benefit of anyone else who’s curious.

Of course, none of this is meant to invalidate headcanons or whatever; Neil himself is firmly against doing so. But I’ve personally had no issue accepting author’s word with this series, since Neil has not, as yet, done anything that made me want to shout at him or eat a couch in frustration, which is a refreshing change from the writers in most of the fandoms I’ve ever been part of. So, for what it’s worth, here are the answers. At least some of them; I know I’ve missed a lot.

(And yes, they pretty much all relate to the angels and demons, Crowly and Aziraphale specifically. There were very few asks that DIDN’T concern them, and none that I have saved. Of course, the ask box is still open…)

I think a lot of people assume in their heads that Europe is further south than it is because it’s so warm there in comparison to say, Siberia or northern Canada.

Well why is Europe so warm then? I’m glad you asked. They get all the hot wind.

And you may reasonably ask, is this hot air coming from the central Atlantic or from the mouths of European politicians? Like most things it’s a combination of different… but no yeah it’s just warm air currents from down south in the tropics

This also shows why a relatively mild heat in California or Texas might cause drought and heat-stroke in places like England or Denmark, because those areas are used to Northern-Canada levels of heat

I think the thing that affected me most when moving across the ocean is the strange high light in Northern Europe. The sky is a different color, and the winters are just slightly darker and drawn-in.

Honestly rude customer interactions at craft stores go down pretty easy because when someone acts like a jerk there's always three older women in line behind him who disapprovingly tell me "well THEY weren't acting very nice" and commiserate about how no one knows how to behave in public anymore

i just saw someone try to say that garak only lies that much because he's a spy and that most cardassians aren't like that

the Cardassian culture is explicitly fascist and relies heavily on doublethink - thinking 2 conflicting things at the same time that are contradictory, eg the state is perfect and we must love and serve the state, and also our children are starving and we must work to feed them

so yeah, ALL cardassians lie constantly to each other and themselves

the Federation are Liberal yanks who pretend to be multicultural while practising a cosmopolitan supremacy and do their best to force other cultures to conform with their Human ideals, yes, but the cardassians would think it was normal to condition small children to stand and recite a prayer at the sight of their flag as a method of school day indoctrination, you know

like Americans

garak's version of deception is a lot more theatrical than other cardassians', but by no means is it UNUSUAL

this is why dukat has a mental breakdown after damar executes his daughter even though dukat repeatedly thought about and almost killed her himself, for example

Also remember that they have an entire ceremony surrounding the death of family members where those who are dying get to unload all their secrets to their family/ friends?

I think this is important because:

1) it is EXPECTED in Cardassian culture to have secrets, to have thoughts, opinions or information that belongs only to you.

2) you are not expected to take that information to the grave. This is probably why assassination is so big. If a person becomes terminally ill then they have a chance to spill their guts free from social consequence.

3) it’s a fascinating concept, I imagine there’s some deeper cultural significance to revealing all your secrets on your death bed. Like it lightens your soul so you can rest peacefully. Might also play a part in how Cardassians don’t allow outsiders to see their dead, like “they are free of the cruelty of life. Nobody and nothing should torment them anymore” something like that?

More evidence that all Cardassians lie and obfuscate:

they flirt by arguing. This is probably because openly displaying affection to a person you aren’t married too could be seen as crass or publicly indecent. So if you argue you can express heavy emotions without saying the quiet part loud. You can say “I think your opinion is utter trite” and what you actually mean is: “I love spending time with you, you make me feel warm and fuzzy inside” again this is lying in every day conversation.

In conclusion, no not all Cardassians lie through every breath, but many do.

I have a strong inclination to believe this is a class thing. The higher on the class ladder you are the more cultural incentive you have to be snake tongued.

For example Garak and Dukat have families from very high Cardassian society. As such the two of them are compulsive liars, not just in truthfulness but to themselves (I’m looking at you Dukat) and as a means of manipulating people around them. Lying to get your way is probably just a basic survival skill for Cardassians from prominent families. Garak being the secret son of the Obsidion Order head just so happened to have that aspect of his culture magnified intensely.

Comparatively if you look at Damar who is more verbally forthright, I get the strong inclination to believe he was born middle class and fought his way to the top. Consider also, he was a man of the people and retained his Legat title even as head of central command and a rebel leader. The fact that he never takes the Gul title tells me that he has humble origins. This all probably explains why Damar is more likely to say exactly what he means.

Mila who is a house keeper is also not a very strong liar, but then again she holds heavy secrets very well. She’s not a liar so much as a steel trap for knowledge.

Cardassian society are not “liars” so much as they are people who speak a different syntax to other cultures. “Darmok and Jilad and Tanagura” style language that communicates more between the lines than through the actual words themselves.

The written script for Kardasi is also extremely visually complex which indicates to me that again, there is more said in what is NOT said.

And I guess that knowledge led me to rendering her with her entire fist stuffed into a mug of hot cocoa? Anyway…
