Mr. Gaiman, I wanna learn how to beat the snot out of my characters when I write. To really make the reader FEEL the beat down. Viscerally. Problem is, I don't know how to do that...and none of the books I've read have major beat downs in them. Would you have any title recommendations that I could learn from?

Don’t worry about how to beat them up. Just love them and care for them and make sure that when the plot takes you to places where they get hurt that you feel for them, because that way your readers will feel what you feel.

2021… a year of me posting pretty much nothing but god have I loved seeing all the amazing work from those I follow! Amazing art, writing, the talent - and the love! - is real and I’m frequently blown away by it. Happy early 2022 all! ♥️ I was surprised by a late Christmas present from my mother today… think I might have mentioned my love of Good Omens to her one too many times this year 🤷‍♀️

In the absence of authorized merchandise, I love that people are making their own. Even if this one looks like it says “I am an angel, you are a lemon. We’re hereditary enemies”. Which is a very different show.

Im sure this has been asked before, but I have been looking for an hour now and haven't found it. Maybe I'm just a history and religion nerd, but a lot of sources say that James Ussher said that the Earth was created on October 23rd, and I've watched the show a lot, and I'm still pretty sure it says the 21st. I looked for an important date on that day (not very well), I was just wondering why this was changed? Or if it was just a mix-up in facts, which I understand happens sometimes.

I was using the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. That was what it said. (Also it spelled Ussher Usher, which has had people telling us off every since, starting with Dave Langford, the first Beta reader, and after him the sub-editor. I wish I’d listened.)

Hi! First, I want to thank you for your work, that has really helped me through hard times.

I have a question: has the book of C. S. Lewis, “The Screwtape Letters” inspired you for the making of the Good Omens world? Like the relationship between the two factions, and the personality of these modern devils?

I don’t think so. I love The Screwtape Letters, and even wrote an introduction to a graphic edition, but Screwtape’s Heaven isn’t a bureaucracy, his Hell isn’t an assemblage of screw-ups. And the demons of Good Omens aren’t invisible mind-reading creatures…

lilysbrain asked:

Hi Mr Gaiman,

I was watching The Witchfinder General (a folk horror film from 1968) and the main villain is a witchfinder called Matthew Hopkins. I noticed that his character design is similar to that of Witchfinder Major Pulsifer from Good Omens. I put some pictures :) i was wondering if this was an intentional thing or just an odd coincidence. Maybe all witchfinders took fashion inspiration from Adultery Pulsifer or maybe all witchfinders dressed like that for practical reasons, or to recognise each other in large crowds…

prismatic-bell asked:

Question about a change from book!GO to show!GO: in the book, Madame Tracy's "spirit guide" is Geronimo. I 100000% understand why this was changed (I was honestly pre-cringing right up until I heard the change and then I was like "oh thank G-d"), I'm just intrigued why Little Colleen O'Leary specifically was chosen--is it a joke I'm missing because I'm Americna, did you just think it sounded amusing, did you need to throw something in there and Colleen was what stuck?

neil-gaiman answered:

I thought Madame Tracy would probably enjoy pretending to be a little Irish girl during her seances. No particular joke.

vbartilucci

“pretending “?

Whatever are you trying to imply?

neil-gaiman

That Madame Tracy is, in the TV show as in the book, a fraudulent medium.
