I'm sure you're probably inundated with asks but when you have the time would you consider writing a post about how you're aging the kitties? Would be really interesting to understand what you're looking at.
It’s a little hard to explain all the signs I look for. I worked at a cat-only hospital for 10 years though so I got to see cats grow up from kittens until they were seniors, and I got to see a great many Ancient as Fuck cats develop so after a while you just start to develop a sense for “looks this age”.
A lot of it is facial proportions- kittens have smaller noses and muzzles and larger ears. Elderly cats often get some muscle atrophy with regards to their jaw muscles so they lose some of the roundness underneath the ears and the cheekbones become more prominent and the muzzle more distinctly defined.
Eye color also plays an important role but is more… ‘biological age’ than 'chronological age’. When they start developing iris atrophy, those color change spots and a change from the smooth iris surface to something more textured, it’s a sign that they are Aging. I’ve seen cats as young as 8 have these changes, and some cats not get them until 16. I’ve also, anecdotally, noticed that once you start getting quite of bit of the iris changes, rather than just a spot or two, the 'old age’ health problems usually follow within a year or two so it’s good to really make sure you’re on top of exams and labwork. There’s also something called lenticular sclerosis, where the lense of the eye gets cloudy. You don’t usually see that in a cat younger than 8 years old.
Teeth- wear and tear, how rounded vs pointy the canines and premolars are.
Body condition - Muscle atrophy in the limbs is not uncommon, and along the spine. The shape of the feet also changes some, but this is something you can really only ever notice in a short-haired cat.
Aging is always hard, but much much easier in person than through photos.
