Defunctland is such a good youtube channel. The showrunner has the remarkable ability to make you care about obscure, random theme park attractions you have never heard of and his storytelling is top notch. It’s a very comfy YouTube channel to put on in the background when you’re working on something else.

That and he casually drops one liners like this and "a POWERFUL rat...named Charles Entertainment Cheese."

My parents have this book called the neil gaiman reader on their coffee table and its so weird because I just think of you as some dude on tumblr who writes cool stuff that i should really get around to reading including somehow wrote mythology crossover fanfic with terry pratchet? Its weird.

I know.

You are always allowed to slip the book off the coffee table at any point and read it. There are so many strange stories in there and a couple that aren’t really that strange at all. Just flip through and find a story title that looks interesting.

Hi Neil,

I have no idea if you recall me, you get so many messages, but earlier this year you gave me some advice on how to get myself writing. Trick myself, you said, start on napkins and post it notes.

It worked. I won nano for the first time with the aid of your gentle advice and encouragement and the words I have aren't bad at all. So thank you. Thank you for the time you give us.

I made good art during the worst time in my life and you helped. I wont stop.

Thank you.

I’m proud of you. Well done.

Hi Mr Gaiman, I'm pretty sure your answer is going to be something along the lines of "just write" but, I am having trouble starting on my book. I have plans, I have a path. But my brain is having issues stepping over the threshold as it were. Neurodivergence is a bit shit like that. Is there any advice you could give?

neil-gaiman answered:

For me, the best thing to do is to persuade my brain that I’m not actually working, that I’m doing stuff that doesn’t matter. Look, I’m not even typing. I’m just scribbling down some ideas. With a pencil! And now I’m typing up notes.

Do something that your brain can’t stop you doing, whether it’s handwriting or dictating or writing on old brown paper bags or big post-it notes.

peppermintquartz asked:

Hi Neil, I am currently studying opening lines of novels I enjoyed to improve my writing. I'm looking at Good Omens, which starts with "It was a nice day." May I know who chose this opening and why?

The original opening of Good Omens was “It was a dark and stormy night.” And then we thought “It wasn’t a dark and stormy night.” was a better take on it. So that was where the book started for a long time. And so when we decided to begin it earlier, in Eden, we wanted another line that described the weather, and “It was a nice day,” seemed like an excellent one. Bland and innocuous and a line that breaks every single rule about what you’re meant to do with your first line. (Grab your reader by the lapels! Hook them in the throat! Never let them go!)
