Hiya! :). Well, because I’m old :D. Back then before social media and google and so, instant messaging (and discussion forums) was The Thing. In the instant messaging (ICQ was popular back then in the czech republic, like 2004 or so) when you wrote one of these (and more) :-), ;-),:-D, :-P,O:-),>:o it translated the emoticon into an emoji and it helped greatly to set the tone of the conversation because sentences can be taken differently if only text is there. Even on discussion forums where it stayed the emoticons. Emojis are still used but there are so many now that you usually pick one from the selection or to copy them? I’m not sure how many people now are used to only write them (somewhere where they translate, or not) but I grew up like that, peppering the text with smile emoticons :). Not going to stop, without them the text doesn’t to me say what I want to say in which tone :).
