October is ADHD awareness month!! Here are some pointers from a person with this condition:

  • Please remember that we are being serious when we tell you that we’ve forgotten something. Don’t get mad at us, don’t lash out - you’re punishing behaviour which we can’t help, and making our condition worse.
  • People with ADHD can’t always stick to schedules and planners. For some of us, routines become tiring and draining, and we need to shake up our schedule to prevent ourselves from getting exhausted. We are ‘loose canons’ for a reason - a reason that we can’t help.
  • We fidget. We fidget a lot. We cannot help this. Staying still causes us to power down and lose our train of thought. Fidgeting is good! It keeps our brain active and focused on the task at hand. Do not shame us for fidgeting.
  • Not all symptoms of ADHD are physical. For example, not all people with ADHD are stereotypically the fidgety, hyperactive kid at the back of the class. For some of us, our symptoms are more mental, rather than physical. Either way, ADHD is ADHD - there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to have it. Don’t stick to stereotypes!
  • Sometimes, everything can be too much. We can get overwhelmed, especially in environments which induce sensory overloads (large crowds, events, public settings, etc.) If that happens, lead us to a quiet and safe environment, and ask said person what you can do to help. Everybody reacts differently, so there is no set way of helping someone with a sensory overload. Just be there for us, but don’t smother us!
  • We are impulsive. We often attempt to pick up new hobbies and give up after a few tries. If you notice us taking on a new obsession, and it’s a costly one, then please try and slow us down. We are usually broke because of these impulsive habits, which should be controlled, rather than motivated.
  • If we interrupt you, then we’re sorry for it! Our minds will forget things instantly, and I mean instantly. If we don’t say our thoughts then and there, then they will be gone forever. Things often can’t wait until the conversation is over, because they’ll be gone by that time!
