every time I see something marketed as an eco-friendly replacement for something that you could simply not replace I can feel my face melting off. buying a new sustainably-harvested wooden soap dish from the zero waste kitchen utensil company that buys carbon offset credits is nice and all, but it's not better for the environment than continuing to use the one from target that you already have. we can't consume our way outta this one boys

Also, just buy a used one. Nothing new can ever be more environmentally friendly than a thing that does the same job made in 1992 that you get at the thrift store for $0.75

Plastic used to be billed as quite the eco-friendly material, because it took a waste product generated from fossil fuel usage and made it productive and useful. Even a single use was considered to be better than dumping the material - and frankly, quality plastic from good feedstock is more practical for some uses than other materials! Just because sentiment has changed to dislike of the material doesn’t mean all of that material should be binned and replaced.

I genuinely think one of the most ambitious, imaginative, revolutionary and radical things we can do with our minds right now is: unpick the fish-hooks in our brains of what is fashionable/cool/beautiful/correct. Reprogram the pleasure of “buying a cool new thing” into the joy of “caring for my long-beloved things.” Reduce the leverage that consumption has on you by changing how you enjoy things and what you like about them. Learn to take pride and pleasure in things that you have, and start noticing the constant pressure to replace things that are fine for aesthetic/fashion reasons. Think about what aesthetics/fashion are for, and which parts you actually like; which parts you can achieve with what you have already, which parts you can make, and which parts are just about buying new stuff.

In the Healed World there is no particular competition for ideologically profound soapdishes, and citizens will be perfectly valuable and attractive no matter what style of jeans they have.

reading the Vorkosigan saga again after a long break and yet again I’m filled with so much JOY! I’m only 40 pages in, barely any plot has happened yet, but the characters, the language, the humor, the everything, makes just reading it a such enjoyable experience

it's as if it was written for me it has everything i want in a book (im compelled to add a bunch of disclaimers to the previous sentence to explain that it of course doesn't fulfill all of my literary needs) but anyway i love the Vorkosigan saga so much it might not be for everyone but it certainly is for me!! books the Vorkosigan saga lois mcmaster bujold liz talks
