I might be a little biased but I’m honestly starting to believe that there’s no purer form of love than the defensive spite you see from biologists that have devoted their life to the study of a maligned or misunderstood species. For example:

The hyena biologist that arranged for Disney animators to come sketch captive  hyenas for The Lion King film (Laurence Frank) was so incensed when the animals were depicted as villains in the movie that he later included boycotting the film on a list of ways the average person could help hyena conservation.

Though it’s commonly known that Charles Darwin’s distaste for parasitic wasps played a role in his development of evolution theory (since he felt no loving God would create animals with such a disturbing life cycle), the biologists who study these wasps find it an unfair characterization. When they were tasked with coming up with a common name for the family of parasitic wasps (Ichneumonidae) that old Charles so disliked, they proposed the name “Darwin Wasps” to spite the famous naturalist who had insulted their beloved family of insects.

Parasitologist Tommy Leung was so frustrated with the way people write about parasites to evoke horror and gore that he started writing a Parasite of the Day blog, that specifically avoids inflammatory or unsettling language to describe them. He also illustrates different species in colorful anime art on Twitter in a series called Parasite Monster Girls—which he calls his “love letter to parasites.”

I guess I’m just saying that if you’re a biologist studying an unpopular species and you have a little bit of a chip on your shoulder about it you can always count on me to be in your corner if you want to get a little petty with the public!

i think we all have that one piece of media we like that’s basically “i love this thing, but i dont think everyone should watch this thing and would not categorically recommend it to other people i know, this thing has a lot of problems and i am the first person you should ask if you want to know a long list of criticisms, but i REALLY ENJOY THIS THING” its like holding up a can of trash to everyone else and saying “you are a reasonable person and you would not enjoy touching this garbage and i value that about you” and then pouring it out on the ground and rolling around in it yourself

I suffered a health problem that left me homebound with limited mobility. During my health scare, my friend never visited me. It was her second year of college but she has weekends and breaks. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and assumed she is busy and that no one owes me anything in life. I healed. She invited me places and i declined once or twice. Unfortunately this made her mad. I feel betrayed by her bc she never supported me.

Maybe the two of you should sit down and actually talk to each other instead of communicating exclusively through assumptions and passive aggressive hints?

i have been prescribed medication for my mental illness(es) and i feel so ashamed. i know i shouldn't, but i do. things have never been this bad and i know the meds will help me cope a whole lot better but the idea that i have to rely on something to just.... function at the most basic level is making me so sad. i know i wouldn't feel this way if a loved one was going through the same thing - in fact, i would encourage them and tell them that this is not anything to be ashamed of. but i don't understand why i can't extend the same empathy and understanding towards myself.

I know it can be a challenge to apply the same compassion we offer others to ourselves, but it’s important that we keep trying and that we stay aware of our double standards. As a person who will probably need antipsychotics for the rest of my life, I’ve had to accept that my brain needs a little help and that this isn’t a personal failure on my side. I hope you’ll find peace with your pills too, and that you’ll give them a chance to help.

can I be bitter and pretentious for a sec? ok, I absolutely hate that if your art/writing isn't fandom-based it's WAY harder to get it attention online. for a while I considered only doing fanart for attention LOL

tonysopranobignaturals-deactiva

you know I could turn this into a rant about the impact of capitalism and consumerism on art but i'm generous enough to not

tonysopranobignaturals-deactiva

i'm now learning how many fandom artists don't even enjoy making that content but do it so it's easy to get recognized /: you're all braver than the troops

it's not capitalism, people just like seeing pictures and stories about characters they're already attached to. just like children want to watch the same movie 30 times in a row or how you have Friends that you talk to rather than walking up to strangers on the street every time you want to have a conversation. we're social animals, we like to see things that we have emotional connections to.

it’s definitely true that capitalism is pushing hard to take Advantage of this fact for money, but fandom didn’t form out of capitalism. and fanfic and fanart being put online for free certainly isn’t either. the people in the 60s mailing zines to each other and making costumes by hand before pictures and vhs’s existed for the characters they were playing weren’t doing it because they were indoctrinated by capitalism, they did it because they were passionate about characters and a world that they cared about.

there’s nothing wrong with feeling Upset about this discrepancy. it doesn’t feel Good to be pressured into changing your art for the sake of what’s popular or to be overlooked because you haven’t. but that doesn’t translate to fandom culture being Immoral. vilifying people for finding comfort in art you aren’t interested in isn’t activism
