I want to be an Egyptian noble so I can loudly proclaim on my stele that I am the owner of oxen and donkeys, but also rich in sheep and goats, but it's only because I want to get into the Afterlife.
Do we know if they actually had all those sheep, or is this a kind of postmortem insurance fraud?
No. It’s something called the Negative Confessions, which I spoke about in the tags on that post. In order to get into the Afterlife you had to proclaim that you were free from transgressions against people, and also that you’d been a good person/member of society in life. ‘I have many sheep/oxen/donkeys’ etc is hyperbole on the stele of the deceased. The deceased will, of course, have had *some* livestock, but to sell the 'I was a productive member of society’ thing, they exaggerate. Since the Egyptians believed words written down then spoken had the power to be brought into being, writing down 'I have many sheep/goats’ etc would manifest it in the afterlife anyway.
