In Ireland, you usually only take your shoes off in someone elses home if invited to by the host or if you know the host really well. Its considered rude & too informal to just kick off your shoes in someone elses home without permission. Obvs exceptions are made for young children & soaked or filthy shoes and every house is different, but thats generally how everyone I know was raised.
