Normally it recognizes common surface proteins on bacteria or viruses. It isn’t specialized enough to launch tailored attacks - so they are most often generic. Whereas, the adaptive immune system can recognize pathogens it has encountered before and remember the tailored approach to eliminate the invader. This property prevents us from catching some diseases a 2nd time
