Unfortunately, it was by no means the ONLY dangerous chemical that was in the ash, dust, and debris. It was a lethal cocktail, and at the time, the EPA told rescue workers that the air was safe to breathe. Even when state EPA workers pleaded with workers on the Pile to wear masks, many refused, saying they weren’t needed.
