DS9: The Maquis: Part 2

Gul Dukat: In Cardassia, the verdict is always known before the trial begins; and it’s always the same.
Sisko: In that case, why bother with a trial at all?
Gul Dukat: Because the people demand it. They enjoy watching justice triumph over evil, every time. They find it comforting.
Sisko: Isn’t there ever a chance you might try an innocent man by mistake?
Gul Dukat: Cardassians don’t make mistakes.
Sisko: I’ll have to remember that.

——————————

Gul Dukat: Why? Because Vulcans don’t lie?
Sisko: As a rule, they don’t.
Gul Dukat: They don’t blow up ships either, as a rule.

I know I shouldn’t even ask. It’s just a made-up thingy to make the show possible in the first place.

That said, does the Universal Translator translate written language too? If it doesn’t, that means Odo can read…

Universal Translator meta!!!

I used to get frustrated while watching Star Trek because they kept saying that they were speaking “Standard” but it was clearly just American English identical to that spoken around the end of the 20th century, and I refused to believe in it. And then I realized: we’re watching the shows through a Universal Translator filter.

I’ve been enamored of Star Trek language meta ever since.

Monkey Slug [Hag moth larvae] (Phobetron pithecium)

The monkey slug is a name for the caterpillar of the Hag moth which is found in North America. They get their unique name due the larvae’s six curly projections which camouflage it in the leaf litter. The Caterpillar will eat almost anything and has been recorded eating deciduous trees from apples to willows. When the caterpillar reaches adulthood the day flying female moth mimics a bee with pollen sacs (males mimic wasps).
