dear self: the whole point of interpretation and meta in a fannish sense is that there are DIFFERENT WAYS TO GO ABOUT ANALYZING A TEXT THAT ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE!!!

(sometimes i have to write it down in all caps a bunch because i forget and i fall into patterns of harmful and unproductive thinking)

and you can read one thing someone’s written about a show and think ‘huh, never thought about it like that, that’s something interesting to keep in mind’ and it doesn’t cancel out whatever different opinion you might personally have, because there are a BILLION AND ONE WAYS TO ANALYZE ANY GIVEN TEXT whether it’s a show or a movie and a book and almost all of them are all A BILLION PERCENT VALID AND ACADEMICALLY SANCTIONED and it’s never about right or wrong interpretation! it’s about using your resources to uncover meaning that you think is important.

and i need to write it out because i’m sensitive and quick to think i’m wrong and back down on an opinion i have when someone else has a different one than me and that’s just silly!

fandom is like an english class — just because that kid in the backwards baseball cap sitting next to you thinks that the narrative is all about class structure or that weird girl with the bad dye job starts talking about how the themes of the novel aren’t consistently articulated doesn’t mean that you have to agree. more importantly, it doesn’t even mean that you have to disagree or even have strong feelings about it! you don’t have to do anything with that interpretation! it exists, it’s valid, and it’s up to you what to do with it next — or raise your hand to add to the discussion!

tl;dr that kid next to me wearing the backwards baseball cap is an idiot that i never take seriously, but i just shrug him off and let him shout into the void because his interpretation is just as valid as mine even if i don’t care about it or agree with it. our different ways of reading a text can coexist peacefully in ways that we ourselves cannot! i’m not sure where i’m going with this but it made me feel better to get it out and i need it on my blog. thank.

My Trekkie mother is complaining about the four and a half year wait between STXI and STID, saying that if these guys don’t start cranking them out faster she’ll take over writing/directing the next one herself.

I tried to explain that the Star Trek fandom is handling their shit...

Famous Words: Two hundred years ago we tried to improve the species through DNA resequencing, and what did we get for our trouble? The Eugenics Wars. For every Julian Bashir that can be created, there’s a Khan Singh waiting in the wings. A superhuman whose ambition and thirst for power have been enhanced along with his intellect. The law against genetic engineering provides a firewall against such men. It’s my job to keep that firewall intact.

Why He’s Awesome: The man does have a point. In a world filled with thousands of Khans, we’d all go deaf from the constant dramatic screaming of Kirk.

—I’m sure we’ll see each other again.
—I’d like to think so. But one can never say. We live in uncertain times.

Hey, waaaait. I call shenanigans.

Andrew Robinson is much shorter than Alexander Siddig. Was he standing on a box for the “boys in tuxes” shot?

laurelhach

Must be, Andy’s only 5’0”

tinsnip

He’s shorter than I am??
Huh.
I still dig it.
So how tall is Sid, then?
How funny is this going to be, exactly?

indigobluerose

According to the stats I could find, Andy is 5’10”, and Sid is 6’.  So not that much difference.

You can see in that scene Andy stands up as tall as he can, and then Sid sort of slumps down a bit and leans forward, to equalize their heights.  There are at least two or three scenes where they visibly do this.  I can only assume that they conspired about it.

(It has the added side-effect of making it look like one of them might lean in any second and steal a kiss, or take a bite, or possibly both.)

tinsnip

This pleases me. I did notice the height difference in a few scenes where they’re walking together - for example, Garak in “The Search” has to scurry a little bit to keep up with leggy Bashir as they walk down the Promenade, and it’s pretty damned adorable.

Random aside - I remember reading a fic where Bashir and Garak are walking together, and Bashir lays his head on Garak’s shoulder as they walk. I had to step away and think about how that might work. I couldn’t really come up with a way.

“Who are you to tell us what we should do!?”

“Your ignorance is astonishing. I am Lwaxana Troi, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed.  Who are you?

Okay if in the process of suddenly juggling such a huge influx of work at once drives me insane and possibly to tears please remind me to channel Lwaxana Troi.

lwaxana troi does what she wants and you best step out of the way

Sorry for going off on a tangent on your post. I just started laughing at benicebefunny's tags and wanted to share them. Hooray for DS9!

Dude, are you kidding? I love it when that happens. Always go off on tangents on my posts.

Star Trek is made for multiple viewpoints and discussions. I was so pleased to see that what started out as a cheesecake post turned into something more thought-provoking!

In short:  you did THE RIGHT THING. :D
