Lady Yate-xel, I think you’re on to something. It is the slimy fetal thing that’s weirding me out. She’s kind of pink and icky. One or the other I can handle. Both is hard.
And I agree with you about her half-formed personality. She doesn’t seem to have an arc. She just kind of shows up, loves her dad, turns up on DS9, says things to people? because the plot requires her to? i guess? and then apparently soon she’s going to die? again because the plot requires her to? so someone else can grow as a character?
Not well handled, and this is on a show that treats even its minor characters like teeny tiny precious things (hi Brunt, hi Weyoun, hi Damar, hi Leeta, etc.), so it really does stand out.
The way Garak reacts to the kiss in this episode is interesting. He’s not quite expecting it, he definitely enjoys it, but his reaction isn’t passionate. When she pulls away and hugs him, he looks like he’s going to burst into tears. Is it being loved that he can’t handle? Is he worried that he’s going to go to the special hell because he’s so desperate for affection that he’s losing his ability to turn her down? How much has he told her about himself?
Wow, this is badly written. I do hope the meaning gets across.

I thought Ziyal was thirteen when she got trapped on the planet and was nineteen when Dukat and Kira found her, though I could be mistaken.

Ziyal was about seventeen when she was rescued from the Breen labor camp, and that was in season 3. By the time this ep rolled by she had aged at least 3-4 years, I think.
I feel much better now. Either of these interpretations is acceptable.
Although she is still a tad young for Garak.
In my head he’s about 45…? and Julian is 30…? So I guess 15 years is okay but 25 is too much…?
Lady, making these boggle-eyed Garaks cheered me up immensely after a poor day so I hope that they can bring even a fraction of the same joy to you.

i actually thought the ziyal make up was really cool. just not with this actress. she went through so many actress and make up changes that it’s kind of hard to keep track, but the general idea they had for her was cool
Young Ziyal worked for me. Older Ziyal… I don’t know. Is it the Bajoran skin tone? Is it the weird kind of ridges? I find her genuinely unsettling, which is a shame, because she’s really very sweet.
Also - how old is she? She was about 12 a couple of years ago, yes? And now she’s aging Alexander Rozhenko style. I’m not sure what to make of it. Garak is very sweet with her, and then he kisses her, and I just don’t know…?
