Just decided to make a post highlighting some of the (many) unique and defining characteristics of my favorite chicken breed: the Russian Orloff.
So what you’ll notice first about an Orloff is their posture. They are big, tall, muscular birds that get their height mainly from their legs and their neck. They hold themselves horizontally, much like game style chickens:

(Pictured above: Jacob, Ron Rector line rooster, and Blossom, Equinox Orloffs line pullet, both showing the typical Orloff posture.)
Next you’ll probably notice their striking color. While there are several recognized varieties, the most common is Spangled, which is a rich mahogany color speckled with white.

(Pictured above: Daisy, Heather Spaet line hen, an excellent example of the Spangle color. Beard should be white.)
Going along with color, the legs of an Orloff should be rich, vibrant yellow.

(Pictued above: Poppy, High Hopes line cockerel, showing off his long YELLOW legs.)
Traditionally Orloffs are supposed to look fierce and predatory. They manage this by having almond shaped eyes, a heavy “beetle” brow, and a stout, hooked beak.

(Above: Jacob has an awesome example of a curved beak and narrow eyes. Blossom has very round eyes and a straight beak, but a heavy, fierce brow.)
A very important trait of Orloffs is their unique head and neck feathering. They should have full, heavy beards, fluffy cheek muffs, a bristled comb, and a well-formed boule (round shape behind their head).

(Above: Poppy’s, High Hopes cockerel, bristles on his comb. Castilleja’’s Heather Spaet hen, round boule. Miles’ , Equinox Orloffs cockerel, excellent round boule and very full beard.)
An Orloff should have a very small “strawberry comb” with a single dimple in it, as though someone pressed their thumb to it and left a print.

(Above: Pansy, Ron Rector rooster, showing off his lovely comb.)
One of my favorite things about Russian Orloffs is that they are goofy, fun, and very lovable both with each other and with people!

(Above: Jacob snuggling into his brother.)
I hope you enjoyed my post about Orloffs! All Orloffs featured are my own.
crowley: aziraphale is such a bastard
gabriel: I know, right?
crowley:
crowley: the fuck did you just say?
look at crowley, asking if he can “tempt aziraphale to a spot of lunch”. what next? you gonna tempt him to a spot of dinner? a spot of staying the night? a spot of staying by your side for the rest of eternity?
I know Cardassia is generally imagined to be hot, dry, and a terrible environment for growing things. So our Garak as gardener image is a lot of him nurturing things out of the harsh environment, and that’s nice. But I like to imagine Garak doing battle with kudzu or ailanthus or the fucking forest that will reclaim your garden if you turn away for a minute and then wtf how are there 5 maple saplings here. Garak with a chainsaw, smiling at Julian and saying, “but so much of gardening is killing, my dear.”
