Medicalese101: Sinuses

wayfaringmd

Sinuses:

1) pockets within bone containing air or sometimes blood. The skull has frontal, maxillary, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinuses.

2) in Southern vernacular, “sinuses” is a condition encompassing everything from nasal congestion, headaches, seasonal allergies, sinusitis, or a viral URI.

3) not an acceptable diagnosis

Bringing it back because I’m seeing a lot of people for sinuses lately.

In related news, pollen counts are high and you can get 400 cetirizine at Sam’s for $15.

scattereda asked:

the shinigami eyes extension is really good for spotting terfs, if you'd like a better shot a not reblogging from them in the future without relying on dogwhistles

seananmcguire answered:

I’m going to reblog from TERFs, because they change their songs when people start catching on.

I’m also going to reblog from racists, sexists, and people whose politics clash completely with my own.

I’m a human being using an open-access platform.  And while I don’t like that I’m going to reblog those people, so are you.  The most careful people I know, people whose memories are better than mine and who are better at spotting dogwhistles, still reblog those people.  I have a very bad history with trying to use extensions on Tumblr–it tends to make the service unusable for me–and if I need an extension to use a service, I stop using the service.  So I will just continue to do my best, and admit that I am fallible.

Most of the Earth is the ocean, and most of the ocean remains unseen—but thankfully, not these amazing animals!

Our colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) have discovered over 200 species in 30+ years of ocean exploration. Here are just a few of the astonishing animals we share our corner of the cosmos with. They’re wonderful reminders of how much we have yet to learn about life on Earth, and exactly what we’re saving when we care for our blue planet.

All the beautiful siphonophores and awesome nudibranchs, crazy jellies, and deep sea vertebrates. The depths of the ocean are so fascinating.
