Человек и Вселенная (Man and the Universe) by Alexei Leonov and Andrei Sokolov, 1976. Artwork by Andrei Sokolov, whose paintings was carried into space in 1971 on Soyuz 11 and transferred to the space station Salyut I for the first orbiting art exhibition. (Sadly, the Soyuz 11 crew died on re-entry when their capsule depressurized and the Salyut I station was allowed to deorbit and crash into the Pacific while the capsules were being redesigned)

Author Alexei Leonov was the first person to “walk” in space in 1965 and led the Soviet crew on the joint Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. He is also an accomplished artist.

if you read in a frog paper “specimen was released in the field immediately after capture” chances are very good that what it actually means is

“i dropped the damn frog and despite the fact that we fell all over each other no one could recapture it”

blueelectricangels

sometimes when i am sad i go read through the tags on this post, because they are 70% other biologists saying things like “AND ALSO FUCK FIELD MICE” and “THAT CRAB ALMOST BROKE MY FINGER” and I am reassured that I am not the only one who has bobbled a wood frog right into their cleavage.

plus six or seven people who just….can’t figure out what a frog paper could possibly be. (guys it’s…a scientific paper. about frogs.)

what is the code entomologists use for “i stepped on it, i’m so sorry, it was dark out and the specimen was very small”

coolmanfromthepast

“Impromptu dissection was performed under less-than-optimal lighting conditions.”

jumpingjacktrash

‘impromptu dissection’ is an alarming phrase in any context and i thank you for it

the-environmentalologist

For the environmental microbiology/water resources papers: “samples site used approximate GPS coordinates for consistency from season to season” which is code for “the undergrad who did this that last 3 seasons graduated and all we have are the GPS flags so the sample site could be any place on this river for 50 yards”

As an addendum to the preceding comment concerning “pierogi, painted eggs, and people in poofy trousers being irresponsible with swords”, if you’ve never seen a traditional Ukrainian sword dance, you’re totally missing out. Video doesn’t really do it justice, but this will have to suffice!

@dramaticbanjo replied:

are the swords sharpened

Typically not, in modern performances, though even a dull blade of that size can wreak considerable bodily havoc if you happen to fumble it in the middle of a particularly energetic manoeuvre.

Gwadar Coast

In 2013, a major earthquake hit western Pakistan; resulting in the deaths of at least 200 people, and the formation of this new island.

The island, called Zalzala Jazeera (Earthquake Island) rose from the sea-floor only hours after the earthquake. Initial reports indicated that the island was 18m above sea level, 152m long and 182m wide. It has since sunk 3m underwater – as part of an ongoing process.
