anyways last night I had a dream that they released the trailer for the Han Solo movie and Michael Dorn was in it playing a character who looked & acted exactly like Worf, except that he was blue. they were like “we think the appeal of the character can really cross over from Star Trek to Star Wars.” also it was announced that Blue Worf was going to be the first openly gay character in a Star Wars film

a tiny fanfic: one day Odo said “gender is ridiculous. why do you solids have so many”

“gender is a social construct” explained Kira, her mind half on the conversation and half on her rebel friends who she still wondered if she was betraying by working for the government. “they can be an important part of an individual’s identity and also a tool used to oppress people”

“i’ve been like twenty genders” said Jadzia Dax as she rolled by on a skateboard. then she did a cool flip and started grinding around the railing of the promenade. “Ben calling me Old Man is actually an inside joke, the result of a hilarious mixup when the translator decided Curzon was probably a dude. Trill don’t have dudes. Trill don’t have ladies. Dudes and ladies are human concepts.”

“most of our pronouns come out of the universal translator as the closest equivalent in the cultural context of the person hearing or reading it,” Worf explained, watching Jadzia and secretly thinking the skateboard thing looked really fun. “there are almost as many genders and pronouns in the universe as there are stars.”

“can i still call Garak my gay lizard boyfriend” asked Julian, who just wanted to be a part of things.

“of course, my dear doctor,” said Garak, who had been hiding under an unoccupied table at the replimat, pretending he didn’t know that the others were only pretending they didn’t see him.

“we are at war” Benjamin Sisko reminded everybody. “or we will be soon, i don’t know, Jadzia’s still here and the prophets said something about… Nevermind. Odo, you can’t decide other people’s genders are ridiculous.”

“i just don’t want one” said Odo, who was very surprised by this point because conversations that started with the words the solids didn’t tend to actually get reactions out of people anymore.

Benjamin sighed. “you don’t have to have one. no one has to have one. everyone can have one, or more than one, or none. please go do your job”

“ok”

“doctor please get out from under that table where definitely no one else is hiding”

“ok”

In my four or so years on tumblr, I’ve seen a remarkable amount of unproductive argument and countless of examples of immature responses to perceived disagreement. I genuinely do not think this is a problem of individual people, but rather stems from a culture on tumblr of seeing argument and disagreement as negative. I think our community would be much more pleasant and productive if we could learn how to discuss things openly and respectfully, so I’m going to share some of my ideas about how to do so, although I certainly still have a lot to learn myself.

  • Be very clear about what your stance is. By using generalizations, you are leaving room for other people to misunderstand what you are saying. Be as specific as possible in your argument/point of view.
  • Be open to changing your mind. An argument that is resistant to facts is usually not a good argument, because it is based on non-factual opinions and prejudices. There is a Chinese proverb that says “only the very wise and the very stupid never change their minds”.
  • Don’t take disagreement or criticism as an attack. This is a hard one to do, but nothing derails a discussion like being overly defensive. This being said, don’t attack others either. It will only make them less likely to listen to anything you have to say. So steer clear of ‘you’ statements, as cheesy as it sounds.
  • No name-calling. It’s easy to want to hurt someone back when they criticize you, but name-calling is incredibly immature and precludes any productive discussion from happening.
  • It’s ok to ask questions to clarify what the other person is saying.
  • If someone else is having an argument/discussion and you have nothing to add to it, just stay out of it. Commenting on it from the sidelines is unhelpful and honestly the type of thing that should have been left behind in middle school.
  • An ideal conversation does not necessarily end in all the parties agreeing, but in all the participants gaining new ideas and perspective and maybe refining their argument or gaining a more nuanced opinion.
  • Discussion, argument, and ‘discourse’ does not have to be a bad thing!

villainous-queer-deactivated202 asked:

I'm doing some culture build and need some help with a word--what would the Kardasi word for 'succubus/concubus/incubus' be? These would be seductive monsters that enthrall and tempt good Cardassians away from Virtuous Behaviour(/The State?) and are very beautiful. And blue. My cardassians like blue a lot bc bowerbird reasons.

cardassianlanguage answered:

I actually had a chat about this with @tinsnip, because this is some neat worldbuilding that I wanted to do justice.

So! For starters, if blue is very popular with your Cardassians, then there ought to be a word for it. As it turns out, among humans at least, linguistically, it takes a while for words distinguishing blue and green to develop. Depending on how old your legends about the various ‘buses are, they might be referred to as “mar” (currently used for green only) instead of “maract” (mahr-asht), blue which I now need to add to the dictionary.

I’m going to suggest “marbet” (mahr-bayt) as the oldest base word for these creatures. Cardassians generally don’t fuss about gender much, and I’m not so sure it would matter much to them whether that sort of monster were lying on top, lying under, or switching, so that’s less important. If you’d like, though, I could come up with multiple words.

Also, many of the oldest religious/mythological figures have regional variants of their names. The goddess who governed the worst of the afterlife was known as Arik'aca, Arik'vassa, or Varikassa. The mother goddess Glacett was also known as Marett or even Lametta. Other gods, like Endaras (a goddess who appears to hardworking Cardassians to grant them her favour) and Oralius tend to have names without many, or any, regional variants. So it’s very possible that there could be other names for these beings. I can lend a hand there, too. <3

One thing that might be kind of fun would be to refer to these monsters as working against Endaras’ will as they tempt faithful Cardassians away from their hard work. Not sure if that would fit with your worldbuilding, but you never know.

Thanks for your patience, and happy writing!
