Do you follow Nicole Cliffe on Twitter? She had a recent thread about having worked in finance during the mid-2000s bubble and one of the things she said was that "All rich people are basically the same", e.g. whether you see yourself as liberal or not you're still profiting off the same extremely corrupt and amoral system sorry this is rambling but penny for your thoughts on the matter?

elodieunderglass answered:

I’m afraid I can only do 1.5 social media platforms at a time and my Twitter stands like Ozymandias’s fuckin legs in the desert. “Look at this shit ye mighty and despair.”

I’m sure she knows her own Take better than I do, and it sounds like it was probably based in experience!

I think that everyone deserves a Good Quality of Life. That’s what I think. And I think we don’t need a huge amount more than that. I think an income of £100K in the UK should get you where you need to be in life, and that’s a few times more than the average wage, and having more is greedy. I don’t think anyone needs billions.

I think we don’t really have the ability to appreciate the gap that has grown between the classes, and how far behind the 1% have left us.

I know a few Old Money Folk and my absolute favorite of them all is this Elder Wizard of Academia who always does stuff like donating £200 to your friend’s GoFundMe just because. He used to drive this magnificently shitty elderly car that was an offence to ALL of the senses and leave it unlocked in random places in cities “because if someone wants to steal it they deserve to have it” and then he’d always look surprised and pleased when it was still in the same place. As soon as you got into this shitbox, it would start screaming opera at you and couldn’t be stopped. In short, exactly the kind of chaotic wealthy archwizard you’d want to grow up to be.

In terms of actual wealth, my old wizard is barely a flea on the back of the wealthbeasts that dominate our forests. He has enough, and he puts it where his mouth is, and he gives a lot of it away. But you look at him and you think “that’s what Rich is; that’s what Wealth is; a hideous thirty-year old tweed blazer, a car that shouts opera, taking me out to dinner, and five thousand books.” And you don’t mind. Elder Wizards are supposed to have SOME wealth. They need to have towers and telescopes and spinning glass instruments that pass through each other in weird intersections, while they sit in the middle eating soup out of a can. All revolutionaries should retire with a little grace and comfort. We don’t mind.

What we do mind is when someone with a thousand thousand times the wealth of an Elder Wizard hoards it and uses it to justify charging his employees less than minimum wage. That’s the wealth that kills people. That’s the wealth that is not compatible with kindness, and the wealth that can’t be earned and wasn’t fairly won. When your money makes more money than you do, and in fact it would be better off without you, then you can no longer say that you deserve to have it. I think the best thing is what JK Rowling did; use what you need, pay your taxes and give it away. JK Rowling was one of the richest women in the world and she gave it away and now she is not. Fair enough. Fair enough.

But sure, leave the Elder Wizards in peace. They’re not even a fraction of the 1%; they are barely on the same graph.

Hope you got your penny’s worth. I’m not sure what this answer is but I’m not really sure what the question was either.

I’ve felt an absence in my Wardrobe of Nerdery, so I bought a grey sweater and remedied that! Now I have a Cardassian-Armor sweater, and it’s really comfy!

So of course I had to go and have a whole dang photoshoot because space-lizards are extremely overdramatic!

tinsnip

Okay, I am gonna reblog this till I die.

Can I ask how you did this? Is it embroidered yarn?

theladygruoch

@tinsnip Yep! It’s embroidered.

I bought a plain gray sweater online, printed out several pictures of Cardassian armor for reference, and made the lines using a chain stitch in light gray yarn I bought at a craft store. I chose chain stitch because it gives a good width to the line and pairs well with a knit. Since it’s hard to draw guiding lines on a sweater, I used a mix of trial-and-error and loose running stitches with plain cotton thread so I had something to follow with the yarn.

The back of the sweater actually looks slightly different from the front. To get it right I had to stare at a fan video of Gul Dukat’s back end quite a lot (fortunately that isn’t too hard to find). Here’s the back view:

I hope this has been helpful, and thanks so much to everyone for expressing interest! It was a little idea I had over a year ago (in this post actually!) that has given me immense satisfaction.

What the pupils tells us about language

neurosciencestuff

The meaning of a word is enough to trigger a reaction in our pupil: when we read or hear a word with a meaning associated with luminosity (“sun,” “shine,” etc.), our pupils contract as they would if they were actually exposed to greater luminosity. And the opposite occurs with a word associated with darkness (“night,” “gloom,” etc.). These results, published on 14 June 2017 in Psychological Science by researchers from the Laboratoire de psychologie cognitive (CNRS/AMU), the Laboratoire parole et langage (CNRS/AMU) and the University of Groningen (Netherlands), open up a new avenue for better understanding how our brain processes language.
The researchers demonstrate here that the size of the pupils does not depend simply on the luminosity of the objects observed, but also on the luminance of the words evoked in writing or in speech. They suggest that our brain automatically creates mental images of the read or heard words, such as a bright ball in the sky for the word “sun,” for example. It is thought that this mental image is the reason why the pupils become smaller, as if we really did have the sun in our eyes.

This new study raises important questions. Are these mental images necessary to understand the meaning of words? Or, on the contrary, are they merely an indirect consequence of language processing in our brain, as though our nervous system were preparing, as a reflex, for the situation evoked by the heard or read word? In order to respond to these questions, the researchers wish to pursue their experiment by varying the language parameters, by testing their hypothesis in other languages, for example.

(Image caption: When confronted with a word, the pupils begin by dilating (0 – 0.5 s), following the general activation of the brain. When this initial activation has passed, the pupils retract (0.5 – 2 s). But the size of the pupil is also determined by the luminosity evoked by the words: when we read a luminance-associated word, the pupils become smaller than when we read a word associated with darkness (1 – 3 s). english major here! just wanted to pop in and say that this is actually a valid interpretation of the story and in shakespeare’s time footwear was indicative to one’s house, so Mercurio wearing a mashup of crocs and uggs is accurate in terms of im just kidding but that sounds like something someone on here would say doesn’t it lol

Awww.

And a question: users of the Cyrillic alphabet, when you see the Latin alphabet, do you get the same quiet ‘what the fuck’ that I get when I see the Cyrillic alphabet? I have to do a quick stroke check every time.

lala-sara

Russian people that never learned in middle school at least one language that uses Latin alphabet? That’s rare. But there is a funny thing when some words can have only letters that look identical in both alphabets but represent different sounds. Like we have the anecdote about “охрана” - some foreign singer on the concert tried to explain who he need meaning people with “охрана” on their jackets which means “security” but he said “oxpaha” - in capital letters it’s the same looking: OXPAHA (lat.) ОХРАНА (cyr.)

This is Sami when she was little, and after she’s grown a bit. She is super adorable, and she knows it. She purrs all the time, and is extra cuddly. But she also likes to scream at 7am that she hasn’t been fed since LAST NIGHT and she’s STARVING.

This is Nellie. She is large and needy, and yells at you from across the room if you are not giving her constant attention. She is super cuddly, but demands to be the little spoon at all times, otherwise she yells at you again. She enjoys yelling…especially at 3am.
